Jorge Lorenzo ‘amazed’ by MotoGP rider who looked like he was ‘riding in the rain’ at Mandalika

Jorge Lorenzo has expressed his awe over one rider who looked like they were ‘riding in the rain’ during the Grand Prix of Indonesia over the weekend.

As a three-time premier class champion who managed to get the better of some of the best riders in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, plaudits from Lorenzo are worth their weight in gold.

The latest rider to receive them is also the man who is the most recent inductee of the Grand Prix winners club, Fermin Aldeguer.

The Gresini Racing rider didn’t put a foot wrong in Indonesia over the past weekend, narrowly missing out on a Sprint win on Saturday after securing his first front row start.

The 20-year-old one-upped himself in the Grand Prix as he quickly dispatched of Pedro Acosta in the opening stages of the race and stretched out a lead of nearly seven seconds to his compatriot before taking the chequered flag for his maiden MotoGP win.

Jorge Lorenzo was ‘amazed’ by Fermin Aldeguer at the Grand Prix of Indonesia in Andrea Iannone comparison

Lorenzo was over the moon to see his fellow Spaniard stand atop the top step of the podium for the very first time.

Speaking to co-host Ruben Xaus on an episode of the Dura La Vita podcast, Lorenzo didn’t mince his words when speaking about the young Murcian rider, saying, “It’s incredible, his riding.

“It looked like he was going very slowly; he didn’t lean the bike, he barely shifted his body; he stayed centred and upright. What amazed me was how smooth and controlled he was.

“Every movement was precise, almost in slow motion, and without mistakes. I mentioned last time that he reminded me of Iannone, but Iannone was much more aggressive, much harsher on the brakes.

“Aldeguer, on the other hand, barely looked like he was riding hard; it was all so fluid, perfectly timed.”

Aldeguer was hailed for his incredible cornering speed at a circuit that was well-suited to the riding style that Lorenzo alluded to. He may even hold an advantage over Marc Marquez in that area.

Aldeguer and Acosta celebrated a Murcian one-two at the race on the Lombok-based circuit for the first time in their premier class careers. They had previously finished in the same formation twice during Moto2, two years ago.

Acosta’s aggressive riding style is well-documented, and Lorenzo compared what he saw from both riders during the race to spot a difference in their riding styles.

“He seemed like he was riding in the rain or three seconds slower than the others, yet he was covering huge distances,” Lorenzo analysed regarding Aldeguer.

“Acosta, by contrast, rides with heavy lean angles, all to the inside, using a lot of body movement and shifting across the bike. Aldeguer, instead, stays completely upright.”

On another weekend where Francesco Bagnaia’s struggles ensued, Aldeguer may have raised some questions within the Ducati stable over the performance of the GP24 bike after it secured another race win in MotoGP.

The 20-year-old may have also raised some questions over the possibility of a seat at the factory Borgo Panigale-based outfit in the future.
