Marco Bezzecchi denied Fermin Aldeguer a first Sprint Race win in a grandstand finish to the Indonesian Grand Prix Sprint, while Marc Marquez suffered a mare at Mandalika.

The MotoGP season rolled into Mandalika this weekend hot off the back of Marquez’s 2025 title coronation in Japan last week. Yet the Ducati rider has not continued his dominant year at the Indonesian GP, with the 32-year-old only able to claim a P7 finish in Saturday’s Sprint.

Fortunes instead looked set to fall to another Spaniard in the Mandalika Sprint, as Aldeguer eyed his first victory as a MotoGP rider in his 18th appearance. The 20-year-old produced a faultless ride to lead from the start, but he would be denied during the last lap by Bezzecchi.

Aldeguer got the holeshot off the line to lead the Sprint, as polesitter Bezzecchi produced a sorry launch and fell from P1 to P8 before the first corner. It was not long before Aldeguer’s horns were locked with his fierce rival Pedro Acosta, as the KTM ace passed Raul Fernandez.

But Acosta’s charge only lasted until Lap 5 of 13, as the Mercian fell at Turn 1 trying to carry too much speed on the brakes in his bid to catch Aldeguer in the lead. Acosta’s crash looked likely to see Aldeguer stand victorious, only for Bezzecchi to deliver a brilliant recovery ride.

Bezzecchi took pole for the Indonesian GP at Mandalika earlier on Saturday, but the Aprilia rider initially struggled to recover from his poor start. Yet after passing Honda’s Luca Marini at Turn 10, he quickly set about catching Fernandez before robbing Aldeguer on the last lap.

Turn 10 was once again Bezzecchi’s hunting ground, as the 26-year-old dived up Aldeguer’s inside and forced them both out wide under braking after the Gresini prospect stayed on the racing line. Aldeguer tried to snap straight back, but Bezzecchi had the pace to stay ahead.

Marc Marquez and Luca Marini penalised during the 2025 Mandalika Sprint

Marc Marquez has produced a very off-colour weekend at Mandalika so far, with the newly-crowned 2025 champion only able to qualify P9 and then even picking up a long lap penalty on the first lap of the Sprint Race due to an incident with Yamaha rider Alex Rins at Turn 10.

Marquez sat Rins up into Turn 10, which sent the Yamaha rider down to P19 and ruined the Spaniard’s superb qualifying result of P4. His penalty capped a torrid Mandalika Sprint Race for the factory Ducati team, with Francesco Bagnaia slipping to the rear of the field early on.

LCR Honda rider Somkiat Chantra was the first rider to fall during the Mandalika Sprint Race this Saturday, and he was soon followed by Tech3 KTM racer Enea Bastianini. While Bagnaia took the chequered flag, the two-time champion finished a huge 29.393s off the lead in P14.

Bagnaia’s deficit to the field even ensured he would not benefit from the eight second post-race penalty that Marini drew after running tyre pressures lower than permitted during the Mandalika Sprint. The Honda rider fell from P6 to P13, thus losing the four points he scored.
