Luigi Dall’Igna has one reservation about calling Marc Marquez the greatest MotoGP rider ever

Marc Marquez has firmly put himself in the conversation for the greatest MotoGP rider of all time after securing his seventh title in 2025.

The Ducati rider has dominated the season, with 11 Grand Prix wins and 14 Sprint victories. Marquez and the Borgo Panigale factory have been a match made in heaven as he grabbed the championship at Motegi.

Marquez has equalled arch-rival Valentino Rossi’s titles as he becomes a nine-time Grand Prix champion. However, Dorna only recognise Marquez as a seven-time champion as they try to move MotoGP away from the lower categories.

Nevertheless, it marks a sensational comeback as the Spaniard wins his latest title 2,184 days after his last in 2019. He had suffered from multiple injury setbacks from his crash at Jerez in 2020, but Ruben Xaus thinks Marquez had an advantage as he learned to adapt his riding style.

Luigi Dall’Igna says it is ‘very difficult’ to compare Marc Marquez to MotoGP riders from other eras

Marquez’s 2025 season has seen the most points scored from a rider in the championship’s history. He is three more wins away from beating his own record for most victories in a single season, set with Honda in 2014.

The Ant of Cervera moves level with Rossi for MotoGP titles and is one away from equalling Giacomo Agostini with eight. Marquez is miles away from the Italian’s 15 overall titles, but many still consider him the greatest rider of all time.

Kevin Schwantz thinks Marquez is MotoGP’s ‘GOAT’ over Rossi, but Ducati chief Luigi Dall’Igna is more reserved on the topic. He says it is difficult to compare riders from different eras, as they had bikes with varying levels of power and aero.

“He has done something incredible, but it is very difficult to compare him with all those who came before him,” he said via AS.

“What I am clear about is that he has written the most beautiful page of motorcycling, that is surely so. Honestly, I think Marc is probably the best, but it’s always hard to make a comparison with drivers from other eras.”

Davide Tardozzi predicts Marc Marquez to be ‘the number one in history’

While Dall’Igna has a reserved view on who is the best rider of all time, Davide Tardozzi believes Marquez holds that title. He has predicted him to top the history books as he continues his career with Ducati.

“Márquez is the best in history,” he told AS. “I think he’s certainly one of the best in history, but he’s not finished yet and he’ll end up being the number one in history.”

Marquez’s Ducati contract runs out in 2026, and the Borgo Panigale outfit will be keen to tie him down longer term. The Spaniard has a high chance of winning the title again next season, due to the manufacturer’s dominance.

Dall’Igna is ‘savouring’ his time with Marquez at Ducati. He knows that it may not last long, as the 32-year-old could soon consider retirement or move elsewhere for the new regulations.
