Marc Marquez became a seven-time MotoGP champion at the Japanese Grand Prix, marking his first title since 2019. It has been an incredibly hard time for the Marquez family in recent years.
The Spaniard was untouchable in MotoGP during the 2010s, winning six titles with Honda between 2013 and 2019. His reign came to an abrupt halt after he broke his humerus in his right arm in a crash at Jerez in 2020.
Marquez tried to rush his recovery, but ended up aggravating the injury, forcing him to miss the entire season. What followed was years of setbacks, multiple crashes and fears that he may not return to his previous level.
After struggling with diplopia and his recovery from numerous surgeries to his arm, Marquez joined Gresini for no money in 2024, knowing that he could win the title on a Ducati. That has come true in 2025 with the factory team as he sealed the deal at Motegi.
The Spaniard has utterly dominated the season with 25 wins to his name, including Sprints. Marquez’s mother told him everything would work out after he decided to leave Honda – her prediction has come true as he finds his form again at Ducati.

Julia Marquez recalls how Marc Marquez told him at Silverstone in 2024 he was ‘out of steam’
Speaking via DAZN after the Japanese Grand Prix, Marquez’s father Julia Marquez reacted to his son winning his seventh title. He recalled the ‘bad moments’ the family has been through over the years where the 32-year-old has considered retirement.
“It’s an honour to be the father of such excellent sons…” he said. “Marc and Álex have accustomed us to winning world championships.
“Today was very special; it has been a long road with many obstacles. Marc has overcome it with a lot of determination, effort, and hard work.

“He has overcome it, and we have helped him in every way we could, but if he hadn’t given it his all, I don’t know if he would have made it. But you know how he is, he always gives 100%, and Pol knows that.
“He knows that whenever he needs a call or whatever, we’re always there for him, no matter what. He knew that, we helped him in every way we could, and it went well.
“There have been some bad moments and some good ones. I remember one last year. I think it was at Silverstone when he said to me, ‘Dad, I’m out of steam,’ and I told him that if he was out of steam, then the others must be too… It’s incredible what he has, he’s very strong.”

What Alex Marquez said about brother Marc Marquez winning the 2025 title
It has been the perfect season for Julia Marquez as he has watched his sons lead the championship from the off. Marc and Alex look set to finish one and two in 2025, creating history in MotoGP.
Alex Marquez has had his best season to date in the premier class, winning two races and battling the frontrunners all year. He has a strong chance of finishing second in the standings, currently sitting 66 points ahead of Francesco Bagnaia.
Marquez is not worried by Bagnaia’s revival in Motegi as the Italian dominated the weekend to claim pole position and a double victory. The Gresini rider is determined to keep the factory Ducati star behind him.
Marquez will get factory machinery in 2026, making him a strong candidate for the championship. Marc won’t give Alex one of his titles, but he ‘would love’ to see his younger brother clinch the MotoGP championship on merit.
