Marc Marquez is poised to seal the 2025 MotoGP world championship this weekend at Motegi. He must outscore brother Alex Marquez by just three points.
On average, Marquez has outscored his younger sibling by over 11 points across the first 16 rounds. Alex hasn’t gained any points since his maiden Grand Prix victory at Jerez back in April.
However, there is some debate as to the milestone Marc is about to achieve. If his 125cc title in 2010 and his 2012 Moto2 triumph are included, it will be number nine.

Exclude them, and it will only be seven. That would be rather awkward for MotoGP, as Marquez himself already celebrated his seventh championship back in 2018.
MotoGP fans enraged over claim that Marc Marquez has only won six titles
MotoGP’s official account has tried to set the record straight ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. In a post on Monday, they said that ‘Marquez is tantalisingly close’ to a seventh title.
The reaction from fans was almost uniformly negative. The consensus, as one succinctly put it, was that ‘it’ll be the ninth’.
Another mocked the series for creating confusion, writing: “MotoGP is the only sport where after winning your eighth title [as Marquez claimed he did in 2019] you have to go back to winning your seventh.”
Fans are unhappy that titles in the intermediate and lightweight classes are being ‘discounted’. The shift towards an F1-style model, where F2 and F3 championships are seen as separate, was called ‘boring’.
“[It’s his] ninth world title,” a final reply read. “Best you listen to your fans and not continue on the path of no return.
What other changes are Liberty Media making to MotoGP?
Technically, this will be Marquez’s seventh MotoGP title. But it’s clear that most fans want achievements in Grand Prix racing to be collated.
Whichever metric is used, Marquez will equal his great rival Valentino Rossi, which makes this championship especially significant.
Barring a shock result, Marquez will win the title at Honda’s home track too, making for a rich narrative.
That’s exactly what Dorna and new owners Liberty Media want at the end of the season that has been largely processional. It’s unclear who exactly is pushing the aforementioned statistical shift.
MotoGP has just introduced a national anthem ceremony reminiscent of F1, much to Marquez’s dismay.
There’s also talk that MotoGP could join the F1 schedule for a weekend to create a motorsport bonanza, but there are no firm plans in place yet.
