Lewis Hamilton now has the backing of £29.5bn-valued F1 team owners to buy a MotoGP crew amid talks

Ferrari driver and seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton failed to convince Nadia Padovani to sell Gresini, but he remains very keen on owning a MotoGP team.

Hamilton emerged as a possible new figure in the MotoGP paddock in 2024 when the Briton was widely claimed to be in talks with Padovani about buying Gresini. Yet those talks did not progress, as Padovani would not sell the team that her late husband Fausto Gresini founded.

Padovani rejected a lot of money from Hamilton for Gresini due to her reluctance to sell the outfit, who field Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer. It even emerged before the start of the 2025 MotoGP season that Hamilton considered investing in KTM, amid their financial issues.

But, in the end, Hamilton was not the first F1 figure to make the leap into owning a MotoGP team in the Liberty Media era after Guenther Steiner led the takeover of Tech3. The former Haas F1 team principal is to replace Herve Poncharal as the CEO of Tech3 from next season.

TWG Global is backing Lewis Hamilton’s interest in owning a MotoGP team

Hamilton is still interested in owning a MotoGP brand, though, and Motorsport.com reports that the 40-year-old’s manager has contacted at least three of the privateer teams currently ‘available’. Marc Hynes has sought to check what teams are on the market in recent months.

A director of one of MotoGP’s privateer crews has also told Motorsport.com that Hamilton’s manager has contacted “all” of the privately-owned teams to express the Briton’s interest in buying them. The F1 legend also has very big backers with the support of TWG Motorsports.

TWG Motorsports is a sub-division of TWG Global, which boasts a reported enterprise value in excess of $40billion (£29.5bn). TWG Global has interests in financial services, insurance, AI, technology, energy and sports – including Andretti and the new Cadillac Formula 1 team.

Cadillac will debut in F1 in 2026 with drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, after TWG and General Motors agreed on a partnership to put GM’s luxury American car brand on F1’s grid. TWG will run the team, who will race against Hamilton in the last year of his Ferrari contract.

Gresini, VR46, Trackhouse and LCR could be on the table for Lewis Hamilton to take over

TWG Global’s motorsport division is now backing Hamilton’s bid to buy a MotoGP team. But it remains to be seen which team the partnership will strive to take over, with Tech3 now off the market. Also, Bajaj Auto bailed KTM out with a €600m (£519m) investment back in May.

Gresini may come back into play if Padovani’s resolve has weakened, while Motorsport.com adds that Trackhouse and VR46 could be on the market. Hamilton’s F1 rival Max Verstappen is exploring buying LCR from Lucio Cecchinello, along with approaching the other privateers.

Trackhouse only changed hands ahead of the 2024 MotoGP season when the team’s parent company, Trackhouse Entertainment, took over the RNF MotoGP Team. It would remain to be seen if the American brand would now be prepared to sell Trackhouse to Hamilton so soon.
