Gresini are one of the most successful satellite teams on the MotoGP grid. While they’ve never won a championship, they’ve put serious pressure on the sport’s big names.
On arguably the most significant day in their history in October 2023, Gresini announced the signing of Marc Marquez from Honda. Marquez would only stay for one year alongside his brother Alex before joining the factory Ducati team, but he took 10 podiums and three Grand Prix wins.
Marquez’s win at the Aragon Grand Prix in September 2024, his first victory since 2021, will forever be etched in MotoGP history as his first aboard a Ducati bike and also aboard a year-old satellite machine.
But what’s the full story behind Gresini in MotoGP and the premier class of motorcycle racing? MotoGP News has all the details…

Gresini MotoGP team name
Gresini are simply known as Gresini Racing. They don’t carry a title sponsor like a number of other teams on the MotoGP grid.
Their previous names include Fortuna Honda Gresini (1997-98, 2002), Telefonica Movistar Honda (2003-04), San Carlo Honda Gresini (2008-12) and Aprilia Racing Team Gresini (2014-21).
Gresini founding year
Fausto Gresini founded his eponymous team in 1997. The late Italian won two world titles at the 125cc level during his racing career.
Gresini entered the 500cc class in their first two years before a three-season hiatus. But they have featured in every single campaign since the 2002 MotoGP rebrand.
Gresini current MotoGP riders
Gresini will field Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer as their line-up for the 2025 MotoGP season.
Marquez signed a new two-year deal in 2024. Aldeguer, meanwhile, steps up to the highest level as a replacement for the older Marquez brother Marc after finishing fifth in Moto2 in 2024.
Ducati signed Aldeguer to a factory contract in 2024 and eventually placed him at Gresini to replace Marquez following the brand’s split with Pramac.

Gresini current team manager and leadership hierarchy
Nadia Padovani, who was married to Gresini, is the team owner and team principal. Michele Masini works under her as the team manager.
They don’t have a technical director like some of their MotoGP competitors. Luca Gresini, Fausto’s son, heads up the Moto2 squad.
Gresini are a satellite team of Ducati
Gresini are one of six satellite teams on the MotoGP grid, alongside VR46, Tech3, Trackhouse, Pramac and LCR. VR46 join them in the Ducati stable.
Before beginning their relationship with Ducati in 2022, they were aligned with Aprilia (2014-2021) and Honda (2002-2013). Aprilia split with Gresini as they set up their own fully-fledged manufacturer squad.
Which bike does Gresini run in the 2025 MotoGP season?
Ducati will supply Gresini with two of the Borgo Panigale brand’s Desmosedici GP24 bikes in the 2025 MotoGP season. Gresini are the sole satellite Ducati crew with two of the Bologna Bullets’ older bikes, with VR46 running a factory-spec Desmosedici GP25 plus a GP24 bike in 2025. The GP24 bike powered Jorge Martin to the 2024 riders’ championship for Pramac.
Gresini MotoGP riders’ championships
Gresini haven’t won any riders’ championships at MotoGP level. However, they have come close on several occasions.
Sete Gibernau was runner-up behind Valentino Rossi in 2003 and 2004, while Marco Melandri lost out to The Doctor in 2005. Gresini returned to the championship podium with Enea Bastianini’s third place in 2022, a result Marc Marquez repeated last year.

Gresini MotoGP teams’ championships
Likewise, Gresini haven’t tasted glory in the teams’ standings. Gibernau combined with Colin Edwards to deliver second in 2004, but that remains their best showing.
They finished just seven points adrift of Yamaha that year, an agonising margin. Marquez powered them to third last term, but they couldn’t compete with the Ducati factory team, who outscored them by more than 300.
Gresini factory base

Gresini are based in Faenza, Italy, which is also the home of the Racing Bulls Formula 1 team. They opened the headquarters at the start of 2015.
Both the racing and administrative branches work at the facility, which is only around 31 miles away from Ducati’s base in Bologna. The impressive site covers 2,000 square metres.
