Carlo Pernat names the MotoGP team he would not be surprised to see Marc Marquez ride for in 2027

Marc Marquez may not be able to win the 2025 MotoGP riders’ title at Misano, yet it should not be long before the Spaniard seals the ultimate fruit of his move to Ducati.

The 32-year-old joined Ducati for the 2025 MotoGP season on a two-year contract after the Borgo Panigale natives decided to replace Enea Bastianini. Yet Marquez has surpassed even the most optimistic expectations by winning 10 Grands Prix and 14 Sprints in just 15 rounds.

Marquez has also won each of the last eight Sprint Races. But his streak of seven Grand Prix wins in a row came to an end in Barcelona, as Alex Marquez won the Catalan Grand Prix last Sunday. So, Marc Marquez cannot win the 2025 title at the San Marino Grand Prix this week.

Ducati would have needed the Spaniard to leave Misano with at worst a 222-point lead over his brother in the standings. But Marc can only leave the San Marino GP with at most a 220-point lead over his Gresini star brother after Alex beat Marc Marquez to win the Catalan GP.

Carlo Pernat would not be surprised if Marc Marquez left Ducati for Honda in 2027

Marc Marquez was looking at winning the 2025 title in Japan or Thailand, even before Alex won in Barcelona, with the premier class going to Motegi and Mandalika in the two rounds after Misano. And Carlo Pernat believes Marquez will be happy if he wins the title in Japan.

Pernat feels winning the 2025 riders’ championship at the Japanese GP on September 26-28 would have an emotional tie for Marquez, given the 72-time Grand Prix winner won each of his six premier class titles so far for Honda. He won the 2013, ‘14, ‘16, ‘17, ‘18 and ’19 titles.

Marquez would not surprise Pernat if he re-joined Honda once his Ducati contract expires in line with MotoGP’s 2027 regulations starting, as well. The MotoGP rider agent sees a future return to the Tokyo manufacturer as the natural final chapter of Marquez’s illustrious career.

Pernat told MOW: “If he could have won [the 2025 title] at Misano, and had therefore won it at Misano, he would have enjoyed the added value of doing so at Vale [Rossi]’s home.

“If he wins it in Japan, he’ll be happy to have done it at Honda’s home. But without malice, especially since I wouldn’t be so sure Marc’s career won’t end at Honda.

“He has excellent relationships with everyone there, and that’s his home. He went to Ducati to win. But would you bet on the certainty that he won’t return to Honda in 2027?”

Marc Marquez could partner Diogo Moreira at Honda in 2027, with Fabio Quartararo replacing him at Ducati

Marquez signed a £10m a year contract with Ducati through 2026 when he agreed to move to the Bologna Bullets from Gresini from the 2025 season. But the MotoGP rider market will explode next year, as only LCR Honda rider Johann Zarco currently has a contract for 2027.

Honda gave Zarco a new two-year factory contract to remain at their satellite team, LCR, for 2026 and 2027. Also, Honda gave Luca Marini a new contract for the 2026 season last week. But Honda’s 2027 line-up is up for grabs, as Joan Mir and Marini’s contracts expire next year.

It is thought that Moto2 gem Diogo Moreira will join LCR in 2026 with a view to stepping up to the factory Honda line-up, potentially even in 2027. Yet it would be hard for Honda to say no if Marquez is on the market and open to re-joining for the arrival of 850cc bikes in 2027.

Ducati know they cannot rest on their laurels that Marquez will sign a new contract and stay in Borgo Panigale beyond his current deal, as well. So, Ducati view Fabio Quartararo as their top target to replace Marquez in 2027, as the Frenchman’s Yamaha deal also lapses in 2026.
