Alex Marquez was pleased with the “positive” points he scored at the Red Bull Ring, despite the Gresini star recording his worst finish of 2025 in the Austrian Grand Prix.
The 29-year-old finished the Austrian GP down in P10 last Sunday, having finished in sixth or higher during the nine previous races he had seen the chequered flag this season. Marquez had also reached the rostrum in seven of the 12 Grands Prix before the Red Bull Ring round.
His long lap penalty for Marquez taking Joan Mir out during the Czech Grand Prix before the summer break ensured the Gresini ace started the Austrian GP with an arm behind his back. The Spaniard slipped from P4 to just P13 after serving his penalty on the third of the 28 laps.
Marquez only re-passed LCR’s Johann Zarco, Franco Morbidelli of VR46 and Aprilia’s Jorge Martin following his long lap penalty. Yet just 0.065 seconds separated him from Trackhouse racer Raul Fernandez in P9 at the flag, who ran as high as P6 after Marquez took his penalty.

Gresini reminded Alex Marquez ‘100 times’ just to finish the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix
The Red Bull Ring’s long lap loop being on the outside of Turn 1 cost Marquez around three-and-a-half seconds, compared to the normal time penalty of around 1.5s. So, he and Gresini knew the Spaniard’s chances to finish highly were likely slim going into Sunday’s Grand Prix.

But as Marquez has tended to lose sight of the bigger picture when he is down the order in the 2025 MotoGP season, Gresini reminded him “100 times” that it was “important” just to finish the Austrian GP and bank the points for his battle with Ducati rival Francesco Bagnaia.
“I’m learning to manage races,” Marquez said, via MOW. “That’s what I was missing. I stayed calm, listening to the team, who had told me 100 times that the important thing today was to finish the race. I did. And we even scored some positive points for the championship.”
Alex Marquez still outscored Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia at the Red Bull Ring
Despite Gresini’s Marquez racing last year’s Ducati GP24 compared to factory rider Bagnaia using the same GP25 with which his brother Marc Marquez is dominating MotoGP in 2025, the Cervera native has 276 points after the first 13 rounds over the Italian’s 221 this season.
While he only took six points with P10 in the Austrian GP, Marquez also still left the Red Bull Ring having outscored Bagnaia, who finished the main race in just P8, across the entire race weekend. Marquez sealed P2 while Bagnaia retired from the Sprint Race at the Austrian GP.
It marked the 2014 Moto3 and 2019 Moto2 champion’s 10th second-place finish in a Sprint Race this season. Marquez won the Sprint Race at Silverstone, as well, while Bagnaia has so far failed to finish a Sprint higher than his five P3s with the bike Marc Marquez has won 12.
So, along with his six points for P10 in the Austrian GP after adhering to Gresini’s reminders, Marquez took a total of 15 points at the Red Bull Ring. Bagnaia, on the other hand, left the foothills of the Styrian Alps with eight points for P8 in the Austrian GP to fade further away.
