Jorge Martin observer reveals the Marc Marquez tactic he’s now copied to maximise his impact with Aprilia

Jorge Martin was a busy man during the summer break, as the Aprilia rider put in the hard yards ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix to shake off the cobwebs from his injury.

MotoGP finally welcomed the reigning champion back to action in the final round before the summer break at Brno. But Martin was still not feeling 100% at the Czech Grand Prix, having spent 461 days out of action from his crash in April’s Qatar Grand Prix up to practice at Brno.

Martin broke 11 ribs and sustained a hemopneumothorax in Qatar when the 27-year-old fell on Lap 13 of his Aprilia debut and was inadvertently hit by VR46 pilot Fabio Di Giannantonio. Aprilia had already been without their new recruit in the first three rounds owing to injuries.

Brno would prove to be a fairly happy hunting ground for Martin to enjoy his second return from injury during the 2025 MotoGP season. The Spaniard reached Q2 at Brno, before then finishing the Sprint in 11th place and scoring his first points in 2025 with P7 in the Czech GP.

Jorge Martin copied Marc Marquez’s tactic by losing weight during MotoGP’s summer break

But, knowing that his stamina was not perfect, Martin focused on building his fitness during MotoGP’s summer break by taking part in a gruelling 71.5-mile cycling event in Andorra. The La Purito stage of the event even featured 4,800 metres of elevation gain over six hill climbs.

The cycling event in Andorra was not Martin’s only tactic to try to maximise his impact with Aprilia when the 2025 MotoGP season resumes at the Austrian Grand Prix on August 15-17, either. Motorsport.com notes that Martin also spent a lot of time in the gym to lose weight.

An insider who watched Martin training during the summer break claims he is ‘stronger and more toned’ than ever before. The Madrid native is even now thought to weigh less than he did while racing in Moto2 during the 2019 and 2020 seasons before stepping up to MotoGP.

Martin invested a lot of time riding a bicycle, a motorcycle and in the gym to try to build his strength and lose weight. The Aprilia ace is the latest rider to look to reduce their weight to aid their performances after the likes of Marc Marquez, Pedro Acosta and Fabio Quartararo.

Jorge Martin will hope his weight-saving will slash his lap times at the Austrian GP

Martin will hope that the weight he shaved during the summer break now transfers into the Aprilia rider also shaving time off his laps. While the Czech GP marked his return from injury, Martin was 0.970 seconds slower than Aprilia teammate Marc Bezzecchi during Q2 at Brno.

Bezzecchi also posted the second-fastest race lap en route to finishing the Czech GP in P2 with a 1:53.894. Only Ducati’s Marquez set a faster race lap than the Italian with a 1:53.691. Martin’s best race lap time during the Czech GP of 1:54.625 was only the 13th-quickest time.

Additionally, Martin was the slowest Aprilia rider during the Czech GP, as Trackhouse racers Raul Fernandez posted a 1:54.405 and Ai Ogura posted a 1:54.577. So, Martin will hope his hard work during the summer break will pay off straight away at this weekend’s Austrian GP.
