Former Alpine F1 director and current Trackhouse MotoGP boss Davide Brivio has had his say on what separates the sports as pinnacles of their respective racing category.
With MotoGP and F1 both being at the top of the two-wheel and four-wheel food chains of motorsports, it’s only natural for fans, pundits and members within each paddock to compare the sporting categories.
Pecco Bagnaia recently drew comparisons to his current Ducati team and Scuderia Ferrari, citing that no matter which sport you compete in, if you’re racing in a ‘Rossa’, then excellence is demanded of you.
Valentino Rossi also stated that the adrenaline before a MotoGP race has no equal, even from that of F1. The nine-time world champion is one of the few people to have ridden a MotoGP bike as well as driven an F1 car, albeit not in race conditions.

Davide Brivio believes the passion of MotoGP sets it apart from the ‘business-oriented’ Formula 1
Speaking to Speedweek, Davide Brivio was the latest MotoGP personnel to compare the two motorsports giants, pinpointing the business-driven culture of F1 as the ‘biggest’ difference for him.
“One of the biggest differences, in my opinion, is that in MotoGP you feel more passion, in the sense of a love for the pure sport,” the Italian team manager started. “Formula 1 is a great sport; I follow every race, and I enjoy the sport.
“But it’s also very business-oriented, which is absolutely fine. These days, sport is big business, and of course, Formula 1 is the pinnacle of this phenomenon. In Formula 1, you might sometimes see decisions that are more business-driven. In MotoGP, it’s perhaps even more sporting.

Despite believing the ardour is better on two wheels, Brivio understands that there is still much that MotoGP can learn from the way F1 is run, continuing, “In MotoGP, we always look closely at Formula 1 in terms of organisation, structure, equipment, trucks, hospitality, and everything else.
“There’s a lot to learn there. There are many good ideas, but it’s difficult for us to implement them because, of course, the budget and available resources are different.”

Davide Brivio is looking forward to the ‘commercial potential’ of MotoGP when Liberty Media take over
This may be something the grid will benefit from once Liberty Media take control of the sport following their successful acquisition of MotoGP being given the green light towards the end of June this year.
Another aspect of the takeover which excites a lot of the teams, including Trackhouse and Brivio, is the ‘commercial potential’ that Liberty Media brings. “We are all very excited and curious about Liberty Media,” Brivio said.
“I’m very interested to see how the collaboration will work out. It’s about growing our audience, expanding the territory where MotoGP is followed, and exploiting the commercial potential we have here.”
“The USA is very important to us, regardless of where Liberty Media comes from. It’s an area we want to expand into. Like Formula 1 seven years ago, when it still had few viewers in the USA. And now everyone there is talking about Formula 1.
“We are an American team, and we really hope that this expansion will happen. We are supporting it as best we can to achieve something in this area. Formula 1 has done a great job in this regard; ‘Drive to Survive’ is a success, and the F1 movie is probably an even bigger one.”
