KTM boss warns Jorge Martin’s ‘unacceptable’ Aprilia decision could have ‘enormous’ effect on MotoGP salaries

Jorge Martin’s decision to activate a release clause in his Aprilia contract has split opinion in the MotoGP paddock. The 2024 world champion had only made one appearance for the team before the bombshell announcement.

All observers were united in shock, but some feel that Martin is entitled to act in his own interests. Riders have a relatively short window in which to win titles, and as this has year shown, injuries can shorten it further.

On the other hand, it could be argued that Martin hasn’t given Aprilia a fair chance. He’s effectively set to leave on a technicality, with his absences inevitably putting him at the bottom of the championship.

The clause, agreed by both parties last year, was tied to his position in the standings. Jorge Lorenzo claims Martin only wanted to sign a one-year Aprilia deal, but he could end up departing before 2026 regardless.

Pit Beirer warns that Jorge Martin leaving Aprilia could have ruinous effect on MotoGP

In an interview with Speedweek, Pit Beirer delivered one of the harshest criticisms yet. Martin left KTM in controversial circumstances in 2020, with the team unable to meet their performance clause due to a pandemic-enforced delay.

In 2023, Marc Marquez parted ways with Honda even though he had another 12 months left on his deal. Beirer feels contracts are starting to lose value.

While this could derail the sporting plans of the manufacturers, it may have wider ‘consequences’ for riders too. Executives might not be prepared to spend so much money on riders, particularly in the early stages of an agreement, if they have doubts over their commitment.

“The situation is very alarming,” Beirer said. “It is unacceptable in every respect that contracts are not being honoured. The manufacturers invest enormous sums in MotoGP projects, and the riders are an important strategic component. This is not a game!

“The contracts are highly valued, are well-prepared, and everyone must adhere to them. Such actions as those currently being undertaken by Jorge and his management can have enormous consequences for the entire paddock.

“The fact is: if such practices continue to gain traction, contracts will look different in the future. This also applies to salaries. And the riders must also be aware: There are only five manufacturers in this paddock, and there’s a certain risk of ruining their chances with such behaviour.”

The expected outcome if Aprilia take Jorge Martin to court

It’s been suggested that Honda have offered to double Martin’s salary should he make a clean break from Aprilia. But some of those funds may have to be put to a different use.

Aprilia are confident a judge would rule in their favour if the Martin dispute went to court. That’s a firm possibility at this stage, though they still hope he’ll reconsider.

Should things progress that far, it’s almost inconceivable that the Spaniard would climb on the RS-GP26. The best outcome for Aprilia would be compensation.

Honda could give Martin the money to pay Aprilia, who would need a new rider. They’re out of step with the MotoGP rider market, so may have to settle for a B-lister.
