Marc Marquez is battling his brother Alex Marquez for the MotoGP championship in 2025.
The siblings have been on another level this season, achieving 1-2 finishes in every Sprint race thus far. No brothers had finished first and second in MotoGP before this season; Marc and Alex Marquez have already grabbed four in 2025.
Alex Marquez won his first MotoGP race at Jerez, establishing himself as a title contender for the first time in the premier class. Not many would have expected the Gresini rider to fight for the title at the start of the season.
Alex Marquez is baffled by people saying he is ‘the surprise’ of 2025, but he welcomes that underdog tag. He is considerably ahead of Francesco Bagnaia on the GP25, but sits 40 points behind his brother after Marc Marquez grabbed his fifth win of the season at Mugello.
Alex congratulated Marc on his 93rd MotoGP win as he finished behind him in second. The pair and Bagnaia produced a brilliant battle at the start of the Italian Grand Prix, before the championship leader stormed away and claimed victory.
A lot of noise has come about Alex Marquez in recent weeks and how he battles with his brother on track. It has prompted debate about whether the Spaniard wants to win the championship himself, or help Marc Marquez claim his seventh MotoGP title.

Marc Marquez had every right to be furious as he was asked if Alex Marquez is his ‘Sancho Panza’
Many people have noticed that Alex Marquez is far more cautious with his brother than any other rider. This is not especially uncommon, as Bagnaia admitted he is more careful with the VR46 riders, given that he came through their academy.
Neil Hodgson thinks Marc Marquez is using Alex in a ‘bizarre’ tactic to win the championship, making sure that he is close to him so that Bagnaia stays behind. At the Italian GP, Marc was asked if his brother was a genuine title threat or if he was ‘Sancho Panza’.
Effectively, he was asked if the Gresini rider was his sidekick, which on another day, as journalist Val Khorounzhiy noted via The Race MotoGP YouTube channel, could have prompted a ‘walk-out’ from the press conference.
“They’ve decided that Alex is going to score consistently, as consistently as he can, and Marc is going to do the Marc thing, which is that, on the average weekend, he wins, but sometimes he loses 25 points and the game is on.,” he said.
“Right now, it looks to be going Marc’s way. During the press conference at Mugello, they were asked the question, I think Marc specifically was asked the question whether Alex was a real title threat, or if he was Sancho Panza from Don Quixote.
“Which was taken remarkably well, given the phrasing of the question, because that’s the kind of thing that I think could prompt a walk-out in a different sort of atmosphere.”
While the Ducati rider kept his cool, he had every right to be furious with the question. Marquez says the brothers are ‘even more tight’ now that they are fighting for the title; to suggest Alex Marquez is nothing but a sidekick is outright insulting to his ability.

Marc Marquez’s mother wants to see Alex Marquez win the 2025 MotoGP title
With 40 points between the brothers, the title is still open for the taking. But with 13 wins so far, including Sprint races, it is hard to look past Marc Marquez.
Alex Marquez admitted Marc is ‘still superior’ as he finds the groove at Ducati. The 32-year-old will also have the factory upgrades to come, which could see the GP25 pull away from the GP24 in performance.
At the moment, the bikes are hugely similar, allowing the Gresini rider to challenge for victories and the title. Marquez’s mother wants to see Alex win the championship, as it would dispel the lie that he joined MotoGP because of his brother.
But the Ducati rider is not looking to hand it to him on a plate. Marc Marquez has told Ducati to not give Alex upgrades as he looks to wrap up the championship as soon as possible.
