Alex Marquez took an emotional first premier class race win at the 2025 Grand Prix of Spain, but left one Gresini chief shaking his head before then joining the celebrations.

The 29-year-old enjoyed an emphatic performance at Jerez on Sunday as Marquez charged from fourth on the grid to score his first MotoGP race win at the 94th attempt. The Spaniard took advantage of his elder brother Marc Marquez falling whilst P3 to go on to win at home.

Gresini ace Alex Marquez initially bided his time until his 32-year-old Ducati star sibling Marc Marquez crashed on Lap 3/25 of the Spanish GP. The Cervera native soon found Francesco Bagnaia in his sights on L4 before passing Yamaha pilot Fabio Quartararo for the lead on L11.

Alex Marquez left his Gresini crew chief nervous waving at fans en route to winning the Spanish Grand Prix

Marquez made light work of passing Bagnaia up the 28-year-old’s inside at the final corner after getting a great run for Curva Lorenzo out of Turn 12. It then took him until the first turn on L11 to slide down Quartararo’s inside, and then open a 1.561-second margin by the flag.

His victory also saw Marquez return to the top of the 2025 MotoGP riders’ championship by a single point over his brother. Yet knowing that his maiden premier class win was on its way saw Alex make his Gresini crew chief Donatello Giovanotti and father Julia Marquez nervous.

Giovanotti has been Marquez’s crew chief since the Spaniard signed for Gresini in 2023 and could not hide his feelings when the 2014 Moto3 and 2019 Moto2 champion waved to fans between Turns 9 and 10 at Jerez on the final lap to celebrate his imminent Spanish GP win.

“Don’t wave!” Marquez’s dad, Julia, groaned. “He has raised his hand.” To which, Giovanotti replied whilst shaking his head: “Of course, yes.”

Marquez’s dad added: “No, no, it’s not finished yet. Calm here. Be calm. Smooth. Smooth. Smooth… Yes!”

Neil Hodgson lauded Alex Marquez for waving to the Jerez fans at the Spanish Grand Prix

While Giovanotti could only shake the Gresini chief’s head at Marquez waving to the fans on the hill at Jerez’s Turn 9-10 on the final lap of the Spanish GP – which also left his dad feeling rather nervous – Neil Hodgson hailed it, as TNT Sports commentator Gavin Emmett laughed.

Hodgson immediately spotted Marquez raise his left hand through the double right-handers while speaking over the 29-year-old’s last lap. So, the 2003 World Superbikes champion said: “He can ride a motorcycle. He’s a two-time world champion, and he’s about to win his first official MotoGP Grand Prix, and he waved to the crowd. Good lad!”

Emmett added whilst laughing, referencing the Jerez track invasion as Alex Criville and Mick Doohan had a last lap fight in the 1996 Spanish GP that saw the home favourite crash at the final corner: “At least there’s no fans on the track on this occasion for a first MotoGP win!”
