Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta explains what is ‘strange’ about Marc Marquez’s dominance in MotoGP

Marc Marquez has been commanding the field in MotoGP in 2025 as he looks on course for his seventh title.

The Ducati rider has adapted brilliantly to the GP25 since moving to the factory team, having ridden the GP23 last season at Gresini. Marquez has been almost unstoppable this season as he has won 13 races out of a possible 18, including Sprints.

Davide Tardozzi was ‘immediately amazed’ by Marquez’s simplicity at Ducati and how he does not like to show off. The Spaniard has been fully focused on his efforts on the track, which is paying off with utter dominance in 2025.

The 32-year-old is 40 points ahead of brother Alex Marquez and 110 points in front of Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia heading into the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend. Crew chief Marco Rigamonti says Marquez can be ‘unbeatable’ if he can perfect right-hand corners.

The Ducati rider has struggled in that area since his injury at Jerez in 2020. But Marquez is now displaying the same level of dominance at Ducati this season that he did with Honda in the 2010s.

Carmelo Ezpeleta assesses the ‘strange’ narrative around Marc Marquez’s dominance in MotoGP

Kevin Schwantz says Marquez’s dominance is ‘boring’ for MotoGP, as he looks a level above the rest of the field. The Spaniard can equal his arch-rival Valentino Rossi’s record for seven premier class titles in 2025.

The Spaniard’s domination this season has led to a ‘strange’ narrative, says Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. Speaking with El Pais, he is baffled by why people are complaining about Marquez’s victories when they claimed that MotoGP was ‘missing a star’ when there were multiple winners.

“It’s strange, because when 14 different riders were winning, they told me we were missing a star, and now that one is dominating, it’s quite the opposite,” he said.

“I believe having a star like Marc makes the whole team grow, but our marketing department must be able to exploit both star power and competitive equality.”

Liberty Media have a lot of work to do to equal F1 success in MotoGP

Ezpeleta is set to make way at Dorna as Liberty Media completes their takeover of MotoGP. The American media company received approval from the European Union’s commission on Monday, uniting F1 and the premier class under one ownership.

With F1 having skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, many inside the MotoGP paddock will be excited by the future, as Liberty hope to have the same success. The company already has huge plans in the works, with a ‘Drive to Survive’ Netflix-style documentary series already being spoken about.

Liberty have been linked with hiring Massimo Rivola as CEO, with the Aprilia chief set to follow in the footsteps of former Ferrari F1 boss Stefano Domenicali if he takes the role. However, it is clear that there is a lot of work to be done to expand the sport’s audience.

Marquez proved that Sprint races need to be changed after winning his eighth race on Saturday at Mugello; no non-Ducati rider has finished on the podium in Sprints so far. There is also the issue of rider finances, with Jack Miller saying newcomers are poorly paid when they first join the sport.
