Jorge Martin’s Grand Prix of Qatar crash was a gutting blow for a man who has battled so hard to return to MotoGP in 2025.
The reigning champion’s pre-season accident and subsequent training aggravation ruled him out of the first three races of the season, before finally returning at the Grand Prix of Qatar.
After showing solid pace during his official Aprilia debut, he even managed to overtake Francesco Bagnaia on merit in the sprint race.
Martin did his own thing during Sunday’s race and pushed a little too hard, running wide over the kerbs and being hit by Francesco Bagnaia, breaking 11 ribs and suffering a pneumothorax.
Medical sources offered a Martin update earlier in the week after he was discharged from the hospital in Doha.
Even Carlos Sainz sent Martin a message to help inspire his comeback. He’s a true competitor and will want to return as soon as possible.

Aprilia will have ‘an idea’ about Jorge Martin’s MotoGP return after hospital checks in Spain
Due to the nature of Martin’s injury and how delicate his lungs may be, he must be flown home specially via medical transport, remaining below a certain altitude.
Martin faces a ‘very difficult blow’ mentally after his accident, and must regain the courage to go fast on a MotoGP bike again.
His boss Massimo Rivola has offered an update on when the team will hear about his recovery time and potential return date.
“The other good news is that on Saturday he will be able to fly back to Madrid with a medical flight,” he told GPOne.
“I think from there he will be able to start his recovery surrounded by his loved ones, although anyway his dad Angel and girlfriend Maria have been in Doha with him, but certainly being at home helps. In Madrid they will do some checks at the Ruber Internacional Hospital.
“After the checks we start knowing what is the real situation and get maybe an idea of the recovery time. For the scaphoid it looked like we had to wait two or three months, but instead it was much quicker. So now we will see.”
Will Jorge Martin return to MotoGP during the 2025 season?
While it isn’t known whether or not Martin can return this season, his injuries alone should take months to recover from.
Then he must work back towards full fitness and being able to cope with the demands of riding at such high speeds over long distances.
And finally, he must be mentally sure that he won’t do himself any more damage by returning this year. He must be 100% ready to return when he does.
A repeat of Qatar could be career-ending, and there’s only so much of a beating that his body can take. His doctors and trainer will need to ensure that he’s near the peak of his powers physically.
If the process unfolds naturally and time is given, then aiming for a return after the summer break should be appropriate. By all means, his title defence is well and truly over.
