Ducati boss thinks MotoGP ‘one-make championship’ critics are all forgetting one thing

Ducati are set to dominate the MotoGP championship in 2025. The manufacturer have locked out the podium in every race so far.

The factory Ducati team have taken victory in every race thus far, with Marc Marquez winning the first five in a row. Teammate Francesco Bagnaia inherited the win at the Grand Prix of the Americas after the Spaniard crashed on lap nine.

Interestingly, neither Marquez nor Bagnaia lead the championship, as Gresini’s Alex Marquez holds a one-point buffer over his brother heading into the Qatar Grand Prix. VR46’s Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio lock out the top five.

2025 MotoGP riders’ championship after three rounds

It seems there is no stopping Ducati in 2025. The Italian brand are already 76 points ahead of Honda – hardly surprising considering they have the fastest and most bikes on the grid.

Ducati won all but one race in 2024 and look set to control the premier class again this year. Critics are not impressed with this dominance, as they see MotoGP becoming a ‘one-make championship’ – Claudio Domenicali has a firm response to that claim.

Claudio Domenicali says MotoGP had a ‘decade’ of dominance from Japanese brands amid Ducati form

Ducati have won the last five constructors’ titles in a row. However, they have only won the last three riders’ titles with Bagnaia and Jorge Martin last season.

Before Ducati’s current run, MotoGP was utterly dominated by Japanese manufacturers. Besides Casey Stoner winning for the Italian brand in 2007, every riders’ title had been won by either Suzuki, Yamaha or Honda since 1975.

This run of dominance came to an abrupt end in 2022 as Suzuki pulled out of the championship. Yamaha and Honda regressed dramatically in performance, paving the way for Ducati to run the show.

Speaking with GPOne, CEO Domenicali sees no issue with a European manufacturer dominating for a ‘decade.’ He thinks critics have forgotten how Japanese brands controlled MotoGP for years.

“I listen to that, but I think the rules are the same for everyone. We provide high performances motorcycles to different teams, and that is why you see hard-fought races that are interesting to the spectator,” he said.

“I would add that for a decade we experienced the supremacy of Japanese brands, so should a good decade present itself for a European manufacturer I think there is nothing wrong with that.”

Which Ducati rider will win the 2025 MotoGP title?

Given their dominance in recent years, it is highly likely Ducati will have another riders’ championship in 2025. Most MotoGP riders back either Marc Marquez or Bagnaia to claim the crown.

The former is the overwhelming favourite after winning five out of six races. Ducati engineers are already favouring Marquez after his start to the year, but Bagnaia is back in the picture.

The Italian is 11 points behind his teammate as he heads into two favoured tracks in Qatar and Jerez. But the big question is whether Alex Marquez can keep up his incredible consistency.

Finishing second in every race so far, the Spaniard is relishing being on the GP24. However, Marquez says he is not ready to win the title as he believes Gresini are ‘lacking’ compared to the factory team.
