Randy Mamola suspects that Jorge Martin has learned from Marc Marquez error that nearly ‘destroyed his career’

Jorge Martin has spent the start of 2025 sidelined with injury. It has hampered the 2024 champion’s title defence with Aprilia.

The Spaniard moved from satellite Ducati team Pramac to the Noale-based team after he missed out on the factory Ducati seat to Marc Marquez. With Marco Bezzecchi partnering with Martin for 2025, Massimo Rivola’s squad were hopeful about their chances.

However, Aprilia’s optimism was shattered when Martin suffered a violent highside on the first day of testing. The fractures to his hands and feet ruled him out of the rest of pre-season.

After undergoing successful surgery, Martin would have been desperate to get back onto the RS-GP25 as soon as possible. But during training, the 27-year-old crashed a supermoto bike and suffered further fractures.

Martin had a ‘troublesome’ issue after breaking his scaphoid in his left hand, which can take a long time to properly heal. Aprilia have since taken no risks with the 2024 champion’s recovery as he has been sidelined for the first three races of the season.

Randy Mamola thinks Jorge Martin has learned from Marc Marquez’s crash in 2020 that nearly ‘destroyed his career’

Aprilia will want their star rider to be as fit as possible for his return to the MotoGP grid. Randy Mamola suspects the Spanaird has learned from his fellow compatriot Marquez.

The six-time champion broke his right arm in a crash in 2020 at Jerez. Marquez went on to miss the season and struggled with injury throughout his final years with Honda when he returned.

Speaking via the official MotoGP website, four-time 500cc runner-up Mamola says Martin must be 100% physical on his return. He thinks the defending champion has not rushed his recovery after seeing what happened to Marquez.

“The long term is, racing a MotoGP bike, you have to be 100% physical if you’re going to race people like Marc.

“OK, the possibility of racing in 15th position or something like this is not where he is or wants to be.

“I think he also, he probably learned from Marc Marquez when Marc came back way too early, which nearly destroyed his career.”

What are Jorge Martin’s chances of returning for the Qatar Grand Prix?

Marquez’s mother Roser Alenta reassured her son that everything will work out after his injury woes. She has proved correct as the 32-year-old has won five out of the six races so far in 2025 – Martin will want to make the same impact on his return.

The Aprilia rider confirmed in Argentina that he would miss the Grand Prix of the Americas. However, he did attend the race and watched on from the garage.

Martin’s appearance was meant to be a surprise, but Aprilia’s plans were foiled by the media. The 27-year-old is eyeing a return to racing for the next round in Qatar.

However, Aprilia doubt whether Martin will be fit enough, which could make his comeback date not for another three weeks at Jerez. Furthermore, Martin will not ride a bike before he comes back to MotoGP, leaving him with little experience on the RS-GP25.
