FIM president Jorge Viegas admits he ‘cannot’ tell Luigi Dall’Igna one thing amid Ducati’s MotoGP dominance, ‘it is a concern’

FIM president Jorge Viegas has admitted that the dominance of Ducati in MotoGP is ‘a concern’ with fans saying the premier class has become a one-brand competition.

The Borgo Panigale outfit’s machines have been the class of the field for the last three years since Fabio Quartararo won Yamaha the 2021 riders’ title. Since then, Francesco Bagnaia for the factory Ducati team and Jorge Martin on a satellite bike with Pramac have lifted the title.

Ducati have even won three of the past four teams’ titles, with Pramac interrupting their run in 2023. The Bologna Bullets have also achieved the constructors’ title in each of the last five seasons. It will be a big shock if anyone but Ducati wins either MotoGP title in 2025, as well.

FIM president Jorge Viegas ‘cannot’ tell Ducati boss Luigi Dall’Igna to stop making the best MotoGP bikes

Bagnaia scored his first win of 2025 in Texas after Ducati teammate Marc Marquez fell in the lead of the Grand Prix of the Americas. It was the first time that the latter did not stand atop a podium this season as Marquez took each of the first three poles and Sprint wins this year.

Taking P2 finishes in each race this year on a Ducati Desmosedici GP24 at Gresini even sees Alex Marquez top the MotoGP riders’ championship for the first time. Riders on Ducati bikes occupy the top five spots with Trackhouse Aprilia’s Ai Ogura in P6 and 62 points off the top.

But while FIM president Viegas admits it is a ‘concern’ to see Ducati dominating MotoGP to such an extreme extent, he ‘cannot’ tell Luigi Dall’Igna that the Bolognese house must stop creating the best bikes. Instead, Viegas must wait for MotoGP’s regulations coming in 2027.

“In this moment, it is a concern because people say this is a Ducati trophy and blah blah,” he told LS2 Europe. “From the six Ducatis, they are in the top 10 all the time. It’s not easy.

“But you cannot tell the genius engineers you are wrong because you got the good solutions and talk with Gigi Dall’Igna and tell him, ‘You cannot do so, so faster bikes. You cannot’.”

Ducati could win every Grand Prix in 2025 after their bikes won 19 of 20 in 2024

Ducati have been the masters at maximising the MotoGP regulations in recent terms as they fully embraced the growing importance of aerodynamics before their rivals under Dall’Igna’s watch. He is now reaping the rewards, to even Viegas’ dismay, and will expect it to continue.

Their dominant start to the season also saw Jack Miller admit he feared Marquez producing a perfect season after joining the factory Ducati team from Gresini this year. That threat has faded with the Spaniard’s crash at COTA but Ducati could yet win every race on the calendar.

Ducati almost saw their bikes win every Grand Prix last season as just Maverick Vinales with Aprilia interrupted their record at the 2024 Americas GP. Bagnaia’s win last Sunday ensured the Borgo Panigale outfit avoided failing at COTA again and will hope it kickstarts his season.
