Liberty Media interested in buying MotoGP

It’s news that none of us really wanted to hear – Liberty Media are looking at buying shares in MotoGP with the aim of owning it outright.  But, just like the 2027 introduction of 850cc engines, it looks like we won’t have a choice in it.

Who?

Liberty Media own Formula 1.  And because they have “Liberty” in the name they’re clearly American and probably think Monterey Jack is somehow the pinnacle of cheese.

Liberty Media bought F1 off that crooked old bloke and the other old dead bloke who used to dress up as a Nazi to be whipped.

Americans eh?

The slow but steady Americanisation of Formula 1 has been great fun to watch.  The  highlight, so far, came last season at the new Las Vegas street race.

What happened?

F1 went full on American.  The drivers were theatrically presented, at night, to the crowd on huge LED lit platforms with flashing lights and ear-splitting dance music.  It was unbelievably cringy with all the drivers, except of course Lewis BLM Hamilton, looking very uncomfortable.

When the actual ‘racing’ aspect of the evening finally started FP1 was cancelled after just five minutes when it was discovered that none of the drain covers had been welded down.  This, subsequently, lead to FP2 being delayed five hours until 2am!

The paying spectators were rightly upset…or they would have been.  Sadly for them they were all angrily sent home because the food venders had all walked off because there shift was over and Liberty Media were concerned about the local’s waistlines.  So, at 2am, FP2 was run to no spectators.

That doesn’t sound too promising.

Agreed.  Think of it as adding more and more glitter to an increasingly smelly turd.

Wait.  What about King of the Baggers?  That’s brilliant.

It is.  And it’s coming to MotoGP this season as a support race for the COTA round!

Now that’s good.  Is there an article somewhere that tells me more about the Baggers?

Back to MotoGP and what other stuff could these no-good yanks do to our sport?

Here’s our top selection:

  • Rename all circuits to have the word ‘Speedway’ at the end.
  • Throw ‘full course yellows’ at any opportunity to ensure the racing is artificially close.
  • Spend ridiculous amounts of time clearing up an incident under yellow flags thus allowing the fans to purchase more grilled-anus based food.
  • Allow teams to have a ‘time out’ and pause the race at any time to discuss tactics and swig Gatorade…whatever that is.
  • Simplify the scoring system by introducing an overly complex qualification scheme that sees all previous results overlooked and instead have one single race at the end of the season that decides the entire championship.
  • Somehow involve Thanksgiving into the calendar.

The future scares me multi-fold and I’m worried for my children.

A correct statement.
