Recent races have shown Yamaha what they must do if Marc Marquez completes a miraculous championship comeback against Jorge Martin.

Marquez’s win at the German Grand Prix allowed him to close the gap to the championship leader, Jorge Martin, to just 18 points.

What once looked like an impossible comeback has now become reality, as Marquez is showing MotoGP the gulf in quality between him and the rest of the field.

Martin heads into summer break still in the lead in the standings, but Marquez has all the momentum in the world on his side.

And should Marc Marquez complete the improbable comeback, Martin’s next team, Yamaha, should be ready to make a change in their approach next season.

Yamaha must prioritise Ai Ogura over Jorge Martin if Marc Marquez wins 2026 world championship

With just 18 points between them, Marc Marquez has the chance to pull off an all-time great comeback and snatch the MotoGP world championship for himself.

For Jorge Martin, who is set to leave Aprilia and join Yamaha in 2027, the pressure is on to keep the lead and win his second world championship.

Especially because if he does falter, it will not be a good look for him. And Yamaha will definitely take notice of him giving up what was a 100+ point deficit earlier in the season.

But what if that is exactly what happens? Well, Yamaha are in luck, as the last few races have shown they have a solution to this problem – Ai Ogura.

Over the last three races, the Trackhouse star has earned consecutive podium finishes, including a win at the Dutch Grand Prix.

If Martin can’t see out such a massive lead, Yamaha would be foolish not to pivot to Ogura, who is younger and showing a lot of promise.

On top of that, Ogura being Japanese gives Yamaha even more motivation, as they could have a native countryman as the face of their team.

Jorge Martin will face similar pressure from Ai Ogura next season

Martin has been under pressure for a large portion of this season, as Marco Bezzecchi looked dominant to start the year.

And while the Aprilia standout has recently suffered a blip in form, there is no denying that he put his Spanish teammate under a great deal of stress early on.

Martin remains confident about his prospects with Yamaha, even with their struggles to remain competitive over the last few years.

And while Martin could be the reason behind Yamaha’s turnaround, Ogura could be the biggest beneficiary of their return to form if things don’t change soon.
