Carl Fogarty says Ducati signed the wrong rider to partner Marc Marquez

Pedro Acosta’s upcoming move to Ducati has generated enormous hype, but Carl Fogarty thinks the Italian team made the wrong decision.

Ducati finally announced the signing of Acosta last month, though it was reported as a done deal as early as January. He will replace two-time MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia as Marquez’s teammate.

While Acosta still hasn’t won a Grand Prix in the premier class, he is widely regarded as a generational talent. Since he made his debut, he has scored 13 podiums, while the other KTM riders have managed two combined.

Carl Fogarty thinks Fabio Di Giannantonio deserved Ducati seat

It was confirmed this week that VR46 rider Fabio Di Giannantonio will leave the Ducati stable to join the KTM factory team, ironically as a replacement for Acosta.

Third in the standings and just 16 points off the lead heading into the German Grand Prix, Di Giannantonio is arguably enjoying the best season of his career so far.

With one win, two poles and three podiums, he ranks as the top Ducati rider this year, though Marc Marquez’s fitness troubles are clearly a factor.

In response to an Instagram post from Di Giannantonio marking his last appearance at Ducati’s Race of Champions, Fogarty wrote: “Ducati should have signed you instead of Pedro…”

In terms of internal candidates, Di Giannantonio arguably deserved to be at the front of the queue, particularly with Gresini duo Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer not yet hitting their 2025 heights.

Jack Miller, Enea Bastianini, Marc Marquez were all promoted from satellite teams, but Ducati ultimately opted to poach a rider from another manufacturer for the first time since 2017 (when they swooped for Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo).

Di Giannantonio, who had been contracted directly to Ducati, will join the younger Marquez brother at KTM after both riders were overlooked by Luigi Dall’Igna.
