Marc Marquez’s MotoGP career never crossed paths with Casey Stoner, and Davide Tardozzi would have loved to have seen them as teammates.
Marquez’s crash at Sepang in Moto2 in 2011 denied him the chance to race with Stoner, as he was being lined up for a MotoGP seat in 2012.
As it happens, that would be Stoner’s last year in the premier class. After winning two titles – with Ducati in 2007 and Honda in 2011 – he called time on his career in 2012, with Marquez replacing him at Honda.

Davide Tardozzi says Marc Marquez and Casey Stoner would have been the ‘team of the century’
Livio Suppo found Marquez easier to work with than Stoner, as the Spaniard found PR work ‘normal’. He would go on to win six titles with Honda after taking over the reins from the Aussie.
Many people have drawn comparisons between the two champions over the years. Suppo believes Stoner had more pure talent than Marquez, but also says the Ant of Cervera had him beat with five other ‘unbeatable’ traits.

Stoner was Ducati’s first MotoGP champion, while Marquez is the latest, winning his seventh premier class title in 2025. Tardozzi says he would have loved to see them in the same garage, calling it the ‘team of the century’.
Discussing Stoner and his impact on Ducati, he told GPOne: “Casey, the talent among talents. But as extraordinary as his talent is, I liked it yesterday when Pecco [Bagnaia] thanked Casey for the help he gave him in some races.”
Stoner had been giving feedback to Bagnaia during his struggles in 2025, hoping to improve his feeling on the bike. Tardozzi added: “Casey has a knack for knowing what a rider needs to go faster.
What is Marc Marquez’s ‘big weakness’ that Casey Stoner refuses to name?
“The racing lines, what to say at the right moment. He’s one of a kind, and it’s true that he helped Pecco during a difficult and important time.
“We’re in Marc’s office, and as you can see, there are also Casey’s and Marc’s racing suits here. They like to talk to each other; they’re two incredible talents who, fortunately, haven’t crossed paths on the track.”
Asked if he dreamed of the two becoming teammates, he said: “A Stoner-Marquez team back in their heyday? The team of the century. Of course, these great talents are one-of-a-kind.”
