Marc Marquez proved to be superior against some of MotoGP’s best-ever riders, such as Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi and Dani Pedrosa. Today, he is still at the top of the field, claims Lorenzo.
The Ant of Cervera was utterly dominant in the 2010s, winning six titles between 2013 and 2019 before his injury in 2020 and Honda’s regression led to years of struggle. But many could see that his ability was still there.
Lorenzo says Marquez would have kept winning with Honda if it were not for his arm injury in 2020. But, eventually, the Spaniard left the Japanese outfit in pursuit of the best bike on the grid, which he found with Ducati.

Jorge Lorenzo says Marc Marquez is ‘still superior’ in today’s generation
Dominating the 2025 season with Ducati, Marquez has had it tough in 2026 as he struggled with the effects of his crash in Indonesia last year. However, the 33-year-old is starting to find his stride again.
Having won the last two races, including last weekend at Brno, Marquez says he is in the title fight with the Aprilias. Lorenzo still sees him as ‘superior’ in the current generation, as they cannot compete with him like he could.
Speaking to GPOne, the three-time MotoGP champion says the likes of himself, Rossi and Pedrosa were ‘right there’ against Marquez, but he would sometimes have the edge. But today, he remains the class of the field.
“What can I say about Marquez? The only things he lacked in the years he didn’t win were the bike – because the Honda wasn’t competitive – and his injured arm,” he said.
Of all 100 of Marc Marquez’s victories, which one is his BEST?
“Without that injury in 2020 and with a bike on par with his rivals, he would have won every world championship, and now he’d be at 12 or 13 world titles, close to matching Agostini.
“It’ll never be like 2019 again, but when he’s more or less in good shape, he’s superior to the others. In our generation, with Valentino and Pedrosa, we were all right there; maybe he had a track where he had a slight edge.
“But against this generation, at 32–33 years old, he’s still superior, and when he’s in good shape and riding a competitive bike, what we saw last weekend happens.
“We shouldn’t jump to conclusions just yet; it won’t always be this way, and there will be tracks where Bezzecchi and Aprilia will be stronger and Marquez will struggle more, but overall, in terms of riding ability, Marquez is still superior.”

Marc Marquez is locked in for 2028
MotoGP could yet see more superiority from the Spaniard in the coming years. Marquez has extended his Ducati contract until 2028, locking him in for the new 850cc era starting next year.
There had been some doubts around his future. Many wondered if he would only continue with Ducati until 2027 due to his injuries, or if he would return to Honda, or if he would retire altogether at the end of 2026.
But he has decided to commit to Ducati, and many believe that Marquez has signed his last contract. He wants to try the new 850cc bikes, but only time will tell if he will remain on top in the new generation.
