MotoGP FP1 results as Marc Marquez sets pace at Hungarian Grand Prix and Toprak Razgatlioglu crashes

Ducati ace Marc Marquez topped the timesheet in the opening practice session at the 2026 MotoGP Hungarian Grand Prix, as Toprak Razgatlioglu had a promising Friday.

Marquez moved the benchmark throughout FP1 at Balaton Park, after initially seeing KTM’s Pedro Acosta set the pace. The reigning MotoGP champion was the sole Ducati rider to take a leading position in the FP1 timesheet, with Raul Fernandez of Trackhouse the lead Aprilia.

Many including Jorge Martin view Marquez as the favourite for the Hungarian GP, despite it being only the second race for the 33-year-old since returning from surgery on his shoulder. Martin, meanwhile, could only manage the 12th-fastest lap time during FP1 at Balaton Park.

Marc Marquez sets the fastest lap in first practice around Balaton Park

Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati set the early benchmark lap time during FP1 at Balaton Park on Friday with a 1:41.800, despite the Italian using medium front and rear Michelin tyres. Most of the field instead opted to start their sessions with soft front tyres and medium rear tyres.

It did not take long for a minor incident to occur during FP1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as well, as Pramac rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu hit Ai Ogura of Trackhouse from behind. A minor misjudgement by Razgatlioglu under braking saw the three-time World Superbike champion tag Ogura and break a small piece off the rear of the Japanese rider’s satellite Aprilia RS-GP.

KTM star Pedro Acosta soon started to lower the benchmark pace, first to a 1:40.219 before recording a 1:39.798 and even a 1:39.005 within the first quarter of an hour. Marc Marquez also started to find a groove around Balaton Park to climb into second place, but 0.614s shy.

Even LCR Honda rookie Diogo Moreira started strongly to sit fourth in the timesheets with a 0.824s deficit to Acosta after the KTM rider’s 1:39.005. At the other end of the order, stand-in LCR rider Cal Crutchlow (replacing the injured Johann Zarco) struggled to find early pace.

Ducati World Superbike rider Iker Lecuona is also standing in at Gresini for Alex Marquez at the Hungarian GP, following the 2025 MotoGP championship runner-up’s surgery. Lecuona used recently racing at Balaton Park in WSBK to quickly post reasonably solid lap times.

Marc Marquez continued to get dialled in around Balaton Park through the middle of FP1, but a minor mistake at Turn 15 saw the reigning champion run on and abandon a lap that could have moved him to first place. Not long after, Marquez climbed to P1 with a 1:39.003 lap.

Marquez continued to lower the benchmark, too, and became the first rider to dip into the 1:38s with a quarter of an hour remaining as he set a 1:38.626. Even Razgatlioglu started to show promising signs as he climbed up to fourth after fitting a new soft front Michelin tyre.

Razgatlioglu’s effort was still quite far off Marquez’s pace, though, with the Pramac star on the V4 Yamaha M1 lapping 1.152s shy of the Spaniard’s time. He was the sole Yamaha rider to show any pace entering the closing minutes, unlike many Ducati, KTM and Aprilia riders.

Factory Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo joined Razgatlioglu in finding pace aboard the M1 in FP1 late on, but still ended the session behind the Pramac pilot who secured a top 10 place.

Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer also made late progress aboard his Ducati GP25 to take P4 in FP1, but no one set a time that threatened Marquez’s position atop the timesheet on his GP26.
