Ducati have had a multitude of world-beating riders in their stable over the years, but in the eyes of Luigi Dall’Igna, one rider’s telemetry data stands above everyone else’s.
Marc Marquez is the latest to have stunned engineers with his data on Ducati machinery. Luigi Dall’Igna previously revealed that Marquez’s telemetry at Gresini was a leading factor in signing the Spaniard over compatriot Jorge Martin during the latter’s title-winning 2024 campaign.
Do you agree with Jorge Lorenzo’s take on modern MotoGP?
However, during a recent appearance at a sponsor event in Milan, the Italian engineer was asked about Jorge Lorenzo’s time at Borgo Panigale, and Dall’Igna was highly complimentary of the three-time MotoGP world champion’s prowess.
Lorenzo spent a total of two years with the factory Ducati team, beginning in 2017. While his tenure at the outfit preceded their dominance in MotoGP, he still managed to secure three Grand Prix victories in the famous red overalls of the factory team.

Luigi Dall’Igna: Looking at Jorge Lorenzo’s data was ‘like admiring the Mona Lisa’
Speaking via La Gazzetta dello Sport, Dall’Igna reflected on his time managing Lorenzo after having led the Spaniard in every Grand Prix motorcycle racing category that he took part in.
“A very special person, whom I’ve had the pleasure of knowing since he was little,” Dall’Igna began, after being asked for his thoughts on Lorenzo. “He’s the only rider I’ve had with me in 125, 250, and then MotoGP.

“I don’t think there’s anyone else I’ve managed in every category, in every aspect of the MotoGP World Championship. He’s an incredible rider. Even as a kid, at 14, he was doing extraordinary things.
“Things I’ve only ever seen him do, especially in the lower categories. Seeing certain lines of his on the computer, certain telemetry data, was like admiring the Mona Lisa.”
Unfortunately, Lorenzo’s time with the Bologna-based outfit was marred by a swathe of injury issues. A crash at the 2018 Aragon Grand Prix saw him sustain a broken foot, which was the beginning of an injury-hit period that followed him into his tenure at Honda.
Jorge Lorenzo’s 2017 Ducati move was the beginning of MotoGP’s rider market ‘chaos’
The MotoGP rider market for the 2027 MotoGP season was in full swing well before the grid’s occupants took to pre-season testing in Buriram.
Recently, renowned rider agent Carlo Pernat identified Lorenzo’s move to Ducati as the origin of today’s ‘chaos’. The Spaniard’s departure from Yamaha was sealed at the season-opener in Qatar, which kick-started a trend that persists today.
One major difference is that no movements have been confirmed yet. Teams and manufacturers are understood to be waiting for an agreement to be reached within the negotiations surrounding MotoGP’s Concorde Agreement.
Negotiations have seemingly hit a roadblock, with further details over the agreement expected to land as the season ensues.
