Joan Mir has been handed a brutal 16-second penalty for his tyre pressure, dropping him off the podium.

Mir had earned a second-place finish at the Catalan Grand Prix. But after the race, it was announced that he, along with Toprak Razgatlioglu, Alex Rins, Raul Fernandez, and Jack Miller, were under investigation for tyre pressure.

This will be a crushing result for the Spanish rider, who had already had a poor weekend after news of Mir’s exit from Honda broke.

Should tyre pressure penalties be scrapped from MotoGP?

These penalties being handed out have allowed Fermin Aldeguer and Francesco Bagnaia to move up to second and third place, respectively.

But for Joan Mir, this penalty concludes what had been a dire weekend for the Spanish rider and for Honda LCR as a whole.

Francesco Bagnaia earns podium finish as Joan Mir handed 16-second penalty at Catalan Grand Prix

After the investigation, MotoGP announced that Joan Mir would be handed a 16-second penalty for tyre pressure, thus taking away his second-place finish.

Mir, along with Fernandez, Razgatlioglu, Rins, and Miller, received penalties over tyre pressure, resulting in a major reshuffling of the top positions after the race.

Now, Aldeguer sits in second place, while Bagnaia earns a third-place finish as the result of the Catalan Grand Prix continues to be as chaotic as the race itself.

These penalties have put a damper on what was already a very scary race, with Alex Marquez’s crash bringing a frightening moment for MotoGP fans all across the world.

Of course, penalties on a day like this will not be the primary discussion point, but it does raise questions about MotoGP’s handling of issues like tyre pressure.
