Fabio Di Giannantonio sent his best wishes to Alex Marquez before celebrating his victory at the Catalan Grand Prix on Sunday.

Gresini say Marquez is conscious after a horror crash involving the KTM of Pedro Acosta, which triggered a red flag. The Spaniard has been taken to a local hospital.

Acosta slowed suddenly on the run to turn 10 after encountering a bike issue, and Marquez didn’t have time to avoid the contact at high speed.

Fabio Di Giannantonio: ‘We are humans and we are in danger’

The race was later red-flagged again after Luca Marini, Johann Zarco and Francesco Bagnaia crashed at the first corner. Following its resumption, Di Giannantonio executed overtakes on Joan Mir and Pedro Acosta to take his second MotoGP victory.

Di Giannantonio had been caught up in the Marquez melee, with a loose tyre knocking him off his VR46 bike and leaving him with clear discomfort in his hand.

Speaking in parc ferme, he said the race was a reminder of the danger that riders face in each Grand Prix weekend. LCR’s Zarco was also taken to hospital with a leg injury.

“First of all, I was really worried about all the riders who crashed,” said Di Giannantonio. “Today has not been an easy day for everybody.

“I really hope that Alex is fine. We’ve been really lucky. We know that our sport is amazing, we try to give an amazing show, but also we are humans and we are in danger.

“I really hope that everybody’s safe, Johann, I saw Pecco a little injured and also Alex.”

Fermin Aldeguer dedicates Catalan Grand Prix podium to Alex Marquez

Fellow podium finishers Joan Mir and Fermin Aldeguer were also thinking of Marquez.

Mir said: “Johann and also Alex, wishing them the best and hopefully see them in Mugello.”

“This race is for all my people and also for my teammate, I hope he’s okay,” said Aldeguer.

Aldeguer missed the opening round of the season in Thailand after breaking his femur during the winter.

Ducati were already without Marc Marquez in Barcelona after the reigning world champion underwent two surgeries last weekend. The team opted not to replace him, with test rider Nicolo Bulega unavailable due to World Superbikes commitments.

18 out of 22 riders were ultimately classified, with Enea Bastianini retiring due to a technical issue and Pedro Acosta taken out by Ai Ogura at the last corner.
