Alex Marquez feels “very lucky” that he shares the MotoGP track with Marc Marquez, but it is also “a pain” to ride in the same era as his brother due to his massive success.

Gresini’s Alex Marquez has largely had to live in the shadow of his elder brother throughout his career, despite being a two-time world champion in his own right. The 30-year-old lifted the 2014 Moto3 title and won the 2019 Moto2 title, before he debuted in MotoGP in 2020.

The fact that Alex debuted in MotoGP with the works Honda team alongside Marc Marquez played a part in the cloud that loomed over him for several years. Many alleged that Honda signed Alex to appease Marc, who won six MotoGP titles between 2013 and 2019 for them.

Alex finally started to silence his critics for good in 2025, however, after he ranked second to Marc in the championship standings – becoming the first brothers to seal first and second in a premier class season. Alex also scored his first three MotoGP Grand Prix wins during 2025.

Alex Marquez admits ‘it’s a pain’ to be in MotoGP at the same time as his ‘Martian’ brother, Marc Marquez

Having finished second to Marc in the 2025 championship, the idea of Alex winning the title while his brother is still in MotoGP is a natural question for the younger Marquez sibling. Yet Alex suggests “I don’t care” about beating Marc to a title, only about becoming a champion.

Alex also feels “very lucky” to share the MotoGP track with his brother, as he can learn a lot from Marc. But it is also “a pain” for the younger Marquez sibling, as Alex has seen so many rivals fall short owing to Marc’s success – which he has to live with in “the era of a Martian”.

Alex Marquez told Cadena SER: “I don’t care about that. I want to be world champion, that’s it. In the end, you are very lucky to be on the track with a guy like Marc Marquez and learn a lot from him. But at the same time, it’s a pain.

“How many people have lost titles because he decided to win seven in MotoGP? A lot. But that is how it is, you have to be around during the era of a Martian, and what can you do? That’s just how it is.”

Even Marc has admitted that the Marquez surname has been a “burden” for Alex during his younger brother’s MotoGP owing to the weight that it carries after his success. Marc has the second-most Grand Prix wins (73) in premier class history and also the second-most titles.

Marc Marquez won his seventh MotoGP title in record time during his first year as a factory Ducati rider last season, having secured the championship with five rounds to play. Another slice of history could follow, as Marc is only one shy of Giacomo Agostini’s eight 500cc titles.
