Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi share a rivalry like no other in the history of MotoGP, and their career stats only reinforce the minuscule gap that separates the two legends in the conversation of who is the greatest rider in premier class history.
What once started as a relationship based around idolisation and mentorship quickly descended into hatred, following the events of the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix.
Valentino Rossi felt like Marc Marquez was aiding Jorge Lorenzo’s title hopes, and it culminated in a dramatic severance of ties between the two MotoGP stars as the Italian kicked out at the then-Honda rider during a race.
The two have rarely spoken a word to each other since, and they likely don’t plan on doing so anytime soon, either.
However, Rossi’s legacy lives on into his retirement, and Marquez is currently trying his best to usurp the Italian legend in every single metric that he can.

Marc Marquez’s route to seven MotoGP titles compared to Valentino Rossi’s
The comparison between Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi’s career statistics highlights two different paths to the seven premier class titles they both currently hold.
Over this journey, Marquez competed in 206 races, significantly more than Rossi’s 166 starts, largely due to the gap years caused by the Spaniard’s career-threatening injuries between 2020 and 2023.
Despite having 40 more entries, Marquez’s win total of 73 is actually lower than Rossi’s 77.
This results in a rather large discrepancy in win percentages; Rossi conquered 46.39% of his races, while Marquez maintained a respectable 35.44% through his seventh title.
Rossi’s era was defined by remarkable consistency, finishing in the top three spots in over 76% of his races.
He rarely crashed out of contention, a stark contrast to the high-risk, limit-finding style that Marquez popularised on his way to dominance in MotoGP.
The Ant of Cervera held a podium percentage of 61.17%, and while he secured 126 top-three finishes, nearly identical to Rossi’s 127, he required a lot more starts to reach the cusp of The Doctor’s tally.
In the qualifying head-to-head, favour swings firmly towards the Spaniard.
Marquez secured 74 poles (35.92%), reflecting his status as one of the greatest riders over a single lap in history.
On the other hand, Rossi’s 48 poles (28.92%) cement his status as a Sunday man who prioritised race pace over single-lap speed.
True or False? Valentino Rossi was a better MotoGP rider than Marc Marquez.

Despite the rift, Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi still share some sporting respect for each other’s achievements
The start of the feud between Marquez and Rossi recently passed its tenth anniversary this year, and despite the fact that they are still not on speaking terms with each other, the sporting respect for each other remains.
Rossi showed how much he still respected Marquez in an interview during the lowest point of the Spaniard’s career.
The Ant of Cervera had been off the grid for a while at the time, but Rossi was certain that he would still prove to be the man to beat upon his return to racing action.
The same homage was paid during the middle of the recently concluded term, after it became clear that Marquez would equal the Italian’s title count in the premier class.
Marquez made sure not to downplay Rossi’s achievements, highlighting that he found it ‘hard to believe’ that he would be equalling the man who he once called his hero.
