Marc Marquez clinched his second Sprint win of the 2026 season at Jerez, but it has raised questions over the rules after he crashed and cut the course to enter the pits.
The Ducati rider took pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix, but he could not convert it to victory on Sunday. Marquez crashed out at turn 11 shortly after losing the lead to eventual winner Alex Marquez on the second lap.
Ducati went without a point in the race as Pecco Bagnaia retired with a failure at the front of his GP26. Fortunately, they did not leave Jerez empty-handed as Marquez won the Sprint ahead of his teammate in a 1-2 finish.
Is all the pressure off Marc Marquez this year?
However, the win came with huge controversy. As the heavens opened at Jerez, Marquez crashed at turn 13 and proceeded to cut across the grass and into the pits to change to his wet bike.
MotoGP officials did not penalise Marquez as he had not gained any lap time with the manoeuvre. But behind the scenes, rival teams were furious, and it has left the governing bodies knowing that the rules need to be looked at.

MotoGP know the rules need to be addressed after Marc Marquez’s controversial Jerez antics
As journalist Neil Morrison noted on the Paddock Pass Podcast, MotoGP officials acknowledge that the rules need to be addressed. Marquez’s win was subject to fury from multiple teams and manufacturers.
“It was probably an issue that is quite specific to only a handful of tracks on the calendar, like here, where the pit lane is shaped the way, it is like Le Mans, maybe you could say Philip Island.
“At no point in the rules does it say you have to.. as long as you’re entering pit lane by the little sign which says 60 kph, where you have to hit the speed limiter or you have to be on or under the speed limit, then that is OK.
Should Marc Marquez have received a penalty for cutting across the track to pit after crashing in the Jerez Sprint?
“It doesn’t say you have to enter the pit lane specifically at the first point. And I think there is an acknowledgement from the powers that be that this is something that they’re going to have to address.
“I mean, everyone yesterday was like, ‘Oh, Marc was clever’ and so on and so forth, there was no element of luck there, but behind the scenes we had multiple people from different teams, different manufacturers explaining their frustration at the uh the outcome of the Saturday.
“And I think there is an admission from the powers that be that this is probably something that will need to be addressed. And I think a communication, what I understand, was sent out to the various teams around the paddock to say, ‘Look, this is a grey area in the rules. We’re going to have to address it.”

What did other MotoGP riders say about Marc Marquez’s Sprint incident?
Naturally, such a controversial incident sparked debate among Marquez’s rivals as to whether his move should have been allowed.
Bagnaia thought Marquez’s move was ‘OK’ as he was fighting for the win. Jorge Martin and Fabio Quartararo agreed that the Ducati rider made the right call.
However, LCR’s Johann Zarco was completely against the move, saying that Marquez did not deserve the victory in the Sprint.
He said, via quotes from Motorsport.com: “If there is no penalty, it’s honestly very strange. Then people will say he knows the rules better than anyone else, but I don’t think so. He just had a lot of luck.
“For me, he shouldn’t win the race, but we’ll see what the stewards decide. He took a big risk, otherwise he would have come in one lap too late.”
