Oscar Piastri wants to see Pedro Acosta ‘on a bike that can compete’ with Marc Marquez

Oscar Piastri says a title fight between Pedro Acosta and Marc Marquez in MotoGP would be ‘really cool’ to watch.

Marquez dominated the 2025 world championship on the Ducati, with Acosta finishing fourth. The KTM rider scored 12 podiums (including Sprints) but didn’t manage to win a race.

The pecking order has shifted this year, with Ducati struggling. The Aprilia duo of Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin have climbed into the top two, with Acosta third and Marquez down in fifth.

Oscar Piastri wants to see Pedro Acosta vs Marc Marquez

The opening Sprint race of the year offered a glimpse of what Marquez vs Acosta title fight might look like. The two riders were involved in a thrilling duel that was ultimately settled by a penalty for the #93.

While Acosta is unlikely to contend this year given KTM’s ongoing limitations, and Marquez’s prospects are uncertain, the two riders are expected to be teammates at Ducati in 2027.

With Acosta replacing Francesco Bagnaia, McLaren Formula 1 driver Piastri might get his wish.

Asked about the possibility of Acosta taking on Marquez for the title in ‘the next couple of years’, Piastri told Quad Lock: “That would be really cool to see. Marquez – I think this year [2025] was really impressive from him, but to see Pedro on a bike that can compete with that would be really good to see for all of us.”

Acosta (21) has been widely labelled the next Marquez (33), so the master vs apprentice narrative would make the rivalry even more compelling.

Oscar Piastri on Pedro Acosta’s ‘impressive’ speed in karting

Acosta is also sponsored by Quad Lock, which gave him the opportunity to share a karting track with Piastri.

According to the Australian, Acosta showed ‘impressive’ pace on four wheel, so much so that his fellow F1 drivers were sceptical about his lap times.

“He was impressively quick. I reckon he had a go-kart before and he just didn’t tell anyone! The track we went to is near Monaco, so there’s a lot of F1 drivers around there that use it.

“I told a few of them, ‘Pedro was actually really fast’ and they all said it was b——-. If he didn’t have a go-kart and that was his first time, very, very impressive.

“He’s obviously incredibly talented on two wheels, so it wouldn’t be that surprising if he was good on four wheels. I was genuinely impressed with how good he was.”

Unlike Lewis Hamilton, who once rode Valentino Rossi’s Yamaha bike, Piastri has no interest in a two-wheel track day for fear of picking up an injury.
