Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso react to Marc Marquez winning the 2025 MotoGP championship

Marc Marquez has returned to the top of MotoGP as he sealed the 2025 title with Ducati at Motegi. The Spaniard has broken numerous records on his way to his seventh premier class crown.

The Ducati rider needed to outscore brother Alex Marquez by three points at the Japanese Grand Prix to wrap up the championship. After the Gresini rider crashed in the Sprint, second place on Sunday was enough for Marc Marquez.

Francesco Bagnaia dominated at Motegi with pole position and wins in both races, while his teammate settled for P2 to secure the title. Neil Hodgson said Marquez looked like Bagnaia as he seemed uncomfortable on his GP25, running wide several times in the race.

But that would not have mattered to the Ant of Cervera, who has now completed his comeback after years of struggles with injury and near retirement. Marquez has now equalled Valentino Rossi for MotoGP and overall titles, which he considers an ‘honour’.

The 32-year-old has also usurped Rossi as the oldest MotoGP champion. However, Leslie Graham remains the oldest premier class champion, winning the 1949 500cc title at 37 years old.

Oscar Piastri and Fernando Alonso message Marc Marquez after winning the 2025 MotoGP title

Several key figures in the MotoGP paddock rushed to celebrate Marquez’s incredible achievement. He has also received congratulations from the world of Formula 1.

The Ducati rider shared a post on Instagram of his celebrations at Motegi as he placed his name on the Tower of Champions once again. Under the post, McLaren F1 star and championship leader Oscar Piastri shared his appreciation as he wrote: “Incredible.”

Fellow compatriot and Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso shared Marquez’s post on his Instagram story. The two-time F1 champion wrote to the Spaniard: “Congratulations! Champion.”

Williams driver Carlos Sainz also sent a message to Marquez via his Instagram story, writing: “Congratulations, Marc! An example of hard work, perseverance, and talent. It’s so great to see you back where you deserve to be!”

MotoGP champions congratulate Marc Marquez on his seventh premier class title at Motegi

Riders up and down the grid offered their congratulations to the 32-year-old after he sealed the title at Motegi. Jorge Martin sent a message to Marquez immediately after he claimed the championship, posting a picture of the pair on the podium last season.

The Aprilia rider was ruled out of the Japanese GP after breaking his collarbone in a crash with teammate Marco Bezzecchi in the Sprint. The 2024 champion watched from the sidelines as his fellow compatriot dethroned him.

Fabio Quartararo had just six words for Marquez as he messaged the Ducati star, calling him a ‘legend’. With the 2025 title wrapped up with five events still to go, it will be interesting to see if the Spaniard keeps up the momentum or takes the gloves off.

With 11 wins to his name already, Marquez could break his own record for most wins in a season (13 with Honda in 2014). An eighth premier class title and 10th overall championship is certainly on the cards in 2026 as Ducati look set to continue their dominance.
