Chicho Lorenzo has insisted that ‘talent’ is not the most important factor in Marc Marquez’s MotoGP career.

Marc Marquez has been a dominant force in MotoGP across two different decades as he found success with Honda and Ducati in the premier class.

Between 2013 and 2023, Marquez won six MotoGP titles with Repsol Honda, but also suffered from multiple injuries since he crashed at the start of the 2020 season. In 2024, Marquez moved from Honda to Ducati as he signed for Gresini, and returned to winning ways on the satellite Ducati, before signing for the factory Ducati squad in 2025.

During the 2025 season, Marquez dominated the field and won the MotoGP title, leading many to continue to share the opinion that Marquez is the most talented rider in MotoGP history. However, some in the know believe that talent is not the most important factor for Marquez’s career.

Chicho Lorenzo reveals Marc Marquez’s most important qualities

Whilst speaking with Moto.it at his training school, Chicho Lorenzo, the father of Jorge Lorenzo, discussed what he has seen from Marquez over the years.

The Spaniard believes that the most important factor for Marquez’s success in MotoGP has been his ‘ambition’ and ‘character’.

Lorenzo said, “I don’t think it’s Marquez’s talent that’s taken him so far. No, it’s not talent; it’s his character, his ambition, and the fact that he lives for it. He lives 24 hours a day for his profession.

“That’s very important in such a competitive sport. Take tennis, for example: one person wins and another doesn’t. But here, one person wins and 30 don’t. It’s very competitive, and you have to stay very focused, dedicating your whole life to it; otherwise, it doesn’t work.”

Marc Marquez’s difficult start to the 2026 MotoGP season

After a dominant display at the 2025 Thailand Grand Prix when he first entered the factory Ducati squad, many expected the same at the 2026 Thailand Grand Prix.

However, it was a difficult story for the reigning champion. Marquez ended his 2025 season on the sidelines due to injuries he suffered at the Indonesian Grand Prix, and he still has not fully recovered from them.

At the opening round of the 2026 season, Marquez finished in second place in the Sprint Race due to a penalty that he was given for an incident with Pedro Acosta. He then went on to suffer a puncture in the Grand Prix after running inside the top five.

After the Thailand Grand Prix, Marquez admitted that he has lost the ‘fluidity’ that he had with his Ducati GP25. Former MotoGP rider, Marco Melandri, also noticed this as he believes Marquez is no longer the ‘fastest’ rider.
