Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer is set to step up his recovery efforts with a private test in a bid to be declared fit to return from his femur injury at the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Aldeguer has yet to join the rest of the MotoGP field this year, as he had to sit out all of pre-season testing in Sepang and Buriram plus the season-opening Thailand Grand Prix. He required surgery in January, after fracturing his left femur while training at the Aspar Circuit.

The 20-year-old underwent the surgery exactly eight weeks ago on January 9 in Barcelona, a day after crashing while testing on production bikes at the track in Valencia. Aldeguer soon ruled himself out of the Thailand GP, for which Ducati test rider Michele Pirro replaced him.

Gresini have been optimistic that Aldeguer may return from his injury in Brazil on March 20-22, as MotoGP stages its first event in the South American country since 1992. But Aldeguer still needs to undergo a medical examination with Dr Angel Charte to be declared fit to race.

Fermin Aldeguer will have a medical check on March 19 ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix

Aldeguer hopes to be passed fit to race in the Brazilian GP by Dr Charte on Thursday, March 19, having now arranged plans to fly to Goiania on the week of the race. That is according to Motorsport.com, which adds that Gresini have until 24 hours before the race to replace him.

Additionally, Aldeguer is set to stage at least one private test before flying to Brazil, in which the 2025 MotoGP Rookie of the Year will use a production bike to further build his fitness. It is not currently known where Aldeguer intends to test, or what production bike he will ride.

Gresini racer Aldeguer has undergone a high-intensity rehabilitation programme in his bid to recover from his fractured femur quicker than the normal four-to-six-month timeline. He has been ‘utilising the latest advances in medical equipment’ to shorten his recovery timeframe.

Aldeguer fractured the diaphysis of his left femur while training at the Aspar Circuit in early January, having crashed during a private test that Ducati ace Marc Marquez arranged for his return from injury. Marquez arranged the test as he had not ridden a bike since last October.

The injury has left Aldeguer needing to play catch-up once Dr Charte passes him fit to race. Having had to sit out all of pre-season testing in Sepang and Buriram, Aldeguer only has one day’s worth of experience with the Ducati GP25 from the 2025 season-ending Valencia test.

Ducati test rider Pirro replaced Aldeguer at Gresini for the Thailand GP, but he finished P21 and last on the circuit in the Sprint Race and then P19 and last in the Grand Prix in Buriram. Pirro even hit the finish line 27.892s off the lead in the Sprint, and 63.598s in the main race.
