Toprak Razgatlioglu warned he has ‘two years’ to perform in MotoGP before ‘everything’ is taken away

Toprak Razgatlioglu’s highly anticipated debut in MotoGP is only a matter of months away now, and one of his former rivals has warned the Turkish rider that his impact must be immediate.

The premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing will be getting a 29-year-old rookie this year in the form of three-time World Superbikes champion Toprak Razgatlioglu.

Razgatlioglu first tested MotoGP machinery with Yamaha in 2022, and is making the move during a transition period for the Japanese constructor.

However, new regulations are expected in 2027, meaning that Razgatlioglu won’t have much time at all to get used to the 2026 spec before things are drastically changed again.

He certainly has his work cut out for him, and one of his former WSBK title rivals has a stern warning for the Turkish rider regarding how quickly he is expected to clock some meaningful results.

Alvaro Bautista warns Toprak Razgatlioglu he has just ‘two years’ to perform in MotoGP

Ducati World Superbikes rider Alvaro Bautista is one of the many riders to have competed in both MotoGP and its production motorcycle counterpart.

During a recent interview with Sport.es, the Spaniard was asked if he had any advice for Razgatlioglu, given his previous experience in the premier class.

He replied, “No, a couple of years ago, when there were rumours that he might be leaving, I told him that he is a star here in Superbikes. In MotoGP, for the moment, he’ll be just another rider.

“He has to earn his place there, and it’s complicated. It’s a very different world from Superbikes, but I also understood that because I come from MotoGP and I know what it’s like.

“However, he’s never been there, and if he doesn’t try, he’ll be left thinking he should have given it a go.

“So that’s how it goes, he’ll see what it’s like, maybe he’ll be good at it and end up spending many years of his sporting career there, or maybe he won’t be so lucky.

“There, if you don’t do well in two years, the young guys come in and take everything away from you. We’ll see how he does.”

Toprak Razgatlioglu will be hoping to exceed the careers of his World Superbikes to MotoGP predecessors

As of the start of 2026, no rider who has made the switch from World Superbikes to MotoGP has ever gone on to win a title in the premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.

Cal Crutchlow is the most successful rider to make the move over, winning 3 Grands Prix and securing a total of 19 podiums over a MotoGP career that spanned more than a decade.

Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss are among the names of riders who join Crutchlow on the list of the very best World Superbikes-MotoGP converts.

Both riders went on to enjoy podium finishes in the prototypes category, with Bayliss notching a fairytale win in the premier class after filling in for Sete Gibernau at the 2006 season-closer in Valencia.

The relatively poor track record means that Razgatlioglu is well within the confines of being the greatest rider to have raced in both categories after starting off in WSBK.
