MotoGP engineer and video analyst Serge Andrey has worked with both Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi.
Rossi contacted Andrey, who was the first to overlay videos of two different riders in the same corner. This enabled him to spot the smallest differences in technique.
Andrey assisted Rossi and Nicky Hayden when they were teammates at Ducati during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.
Who is the greater rider?
2013 debutant Marquez wanted access to the footage too. His collaboration with Andrey lasted eight years – they were still working together at last season’s Americas GP.
Marc Marquez had more free time than Valentino Rossi for ‘intense’ analysis
In an interview with Speedweek, Andrey explained that he watched the Austin sessions from the iconic tower at the Circuit of the Americas. He noticed that Francesco Bagnaia was much more aggressive over the kerbs than fellow Ducati rider Marquez.
While he urged the Spaniard, who was riding a GP23 against Bagnaia’s GP24, to avoid copying the ‘dangerous’ approach in the race, he made it work. Marquez was leading before a brake issue saw him crash out.
This exemplified Marquez’s obsessive mentality. Rossi wasn’t quite as ‘intense’, according to Andrey, but that was perhaps because he faced more commercial responsibilities.
“Last year I was on the tower in Austin, very impressive by the way,” he said. “Bagnaia was a tenth of a second faster than Marc in qualifying.
Lorenzo’s verdict on the Marquez vs Rossi debate
“He saw on the video how Bagnaia was rattling over the kerbs. I told him that wouldn’t work in the race because it was too dangerous.
“Marc told me to go to the same spot in the warm-up, and what did he do? He rode over the kerbs every lap and was then a tenth of a second ahead of Bagnaia.
“That’s just how he is. Second place isn’t good enough for him.
“But Valentino also took the time to watch the videos – not quite as intensely as Marc. But we know how popular he was and how much his appearances were sought after and desired.”
How Serge Andrey made Somkiat Chantra quicker than Marc Marquez
Andrey spent 2024 primarily working with LCR duo Johann Zarco and Somkiat Chantra. At 35, Zarco is the oldest rider on the MotoGP grid and one of the most experienced.
Chantra, on the other hand, was a rookie who largely struggled to justify his place on the MotoGP grid.
Indeed, MotoGP News ranked Chantra last among the full-time 2025 riders. But he did have some impressive moments.
Chantra even outpaced Aragon specialist Marc Marquez through one sector of the circuit, with the help of Andrey.
“Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to release this footage, otherwise I’ll get in trouble with my employer,” he explains. “All the technical data is visible in the videos, and the factory teams are very sensitive about that.”
