Marc Marquez has been linked with a sensational return to Honda as his contract with Ducati expires at the end of 2026.

The 32-year-old left the Japanese giants in 2024 for Gresini after an incredible 10-year spell. He won six MotoGP titles with Honda between 2013 and 2019, before suffering a broken right humerus in a crash at Jerez in 2020.

“Honda is Honda. Honda will come back to the top with or without me. I believe they can do it.”

Struggling with setbacks following the crash and the bike’s regression, the Spaniard moved to Ducati. Crew chief Santi Hernandez was adamant Marquez had to leave Honda if he wanted to win again.

It would prove to be the right decision, as one year at satellite team Gresini led to a move to the factory Ducati team. On the GP25, Marquez dominated MotoGP in 2025, collecting his seventh premier class title with five rounds to spare.

Marc Marquez’s mechanic Javi Ortiz admits it is ‘very difficult’ to return to Honda

Heading into 2026, Marquez and Ducati will be the odds-on favourite for the championship again, which would see him surpass Valentino Rossi for MotoGP titles. But many are already looking ahead to 2027, where new regulations bring a new contract cycle.

Reports have suggested that Marquez is close to renewing his Ducati contract. The Borgo Panigale outfit want him tied down for the next two years, but the new 850cc bikes under the 2027 regulations make any move a risk.

Marquez will decide his future on ‘instinct’, which has fuelled rumours of a possible return to Honda. The Japanese giants are building back towards the front of the grid, having achieved C rank in the concessions system for 2026.

Javi Ortiz, Marquez’s long-term mechanic, was the only Honda staff member who followed the Spaniard to Ducati. He has been with him since his Moto2 days and knows him better than anyone in the paddock.

When Ortiz was asked by Marca about a return to Honda for the duo, he was very honest with his reply: “Nothing is impossible in this life. Difficult? It’s difficult, very difficult, but you never know.”

The difficulties surrounding Marc Marquez’s Honda exit

Naturally, leaving a team that had brought Marquez so much success was no easy decision. But the Spaniard was determined to win another championship, and Honda could no longer provide him the tools.

Honda’s sponsors made Marquez’s exit much more difficult than it needed to be, but in the end, it was an amicable split. Alberto Puig had no hard feelings towards Marquez for moving to Ducati.

The Spaniard will feel good about his decision, now that he stands as a nine-time Grand Prix champion with the Borgo Panigale outfit. Staying at Ducati seems the logical option for 2027, but Marquez and Ortiz have seemingly left the door at Honda open.

Honda have ‘already spoken’ to Marquez amid the contract talk. Whether a move happens for 2027 is unclear, but it seems more than likely that he will extend with Ducati.
