Yamaha chief admits Fabio Quartararo has misjudged some of his comments about the team in 2025

Fabio Quartararo has a reputation for not being one to hide his frustrations on race weekends, and one Yamaha chief has admitted that he can sometimes go a bit overboard when expressing his fury.

The root of Fabio Quartararo’s frustrations that were evident throughout the 2025 MotoGP campaign came down to the poor performance of Yamaha’s prototype.

The Frenchman would often overachieve in qualifying, just to see himself fall down the order once the lights dropped to signify the start of a Grand Prix.

Quartararo doesn’t want to be known as someone who can be quick just over a single lap. After winning his first premier class title in 2021, it’s clear that El Diablo is hungry to add more championships to the list of accolades he already has under his belt.

Maio Meregalli admits that Fabio Quartararo often says things that are ‘off the mark’ in Yamaha debriefs

Despite naturally being one of the quickest riders on the grid, Quartararo’s feedback has been dubbed ‘quite rubbish’ by some figures within the MotoGP paddock.

In an interview with Moto.it, Yamaha director Maio Meregalli was asked about what it is like to work with the hot-headed Frenchman.

Meregalli replied, “He’s manageable. Fabio sometimes says things that are a bit off the mark.

“He thinks for maybe five minutes of heated discussion, then he says what he has to say and that’s it, he’s ready and already focused on the next session, the next race.”

After another poor start to the season for all four of the riders within the Yamaha stable in 2025, Quartararo’s ‘constant pressure’ was a leading factor in the Japanese constructor bringing the unveiling of the V4-powered bike forward.

The factory Yamaha team are desperate to retain the services of the 2021 world champion, but if their new prototype isn’t up to scratch once bikes hit the track next season, it remains to be seen how much longer he will be able to put up with it.

Maio Meregalli also revealed how Fabio Quartararo ‘surprised everyone’ upon joining Yamaha

During his interview with the Italian publication, Meregalli was also asked about Quartararo as a whole, and his first impressions of the 26-year-old during his early days at the Lesmo factory.

He said, “Fabio surprised everyone right away. Three times he rode with the Yamaha M1 with the Petronas colours, and he was strong from the start.

“In a short time, he became a bit of a reference for all the other riders, and when he then moved to the [factory] team, he immediately clinched the championship in the following year.”

He has long been tipped as the antidote to Marc Marquez’s dominance in the premier class.

With the Spaniard now back in his finest form, he could be the only man to put up a fight against the nine-time world champion if Yamaha are able to give him the right tools for the job next year.
