Giacomo Agostini has had his say on who he thinks will be able to take the fight to Marc Marquez and Ducati once the new MotoGP regulations come into effect in 2027.

Marc Marquez, paired with the Ducati Desmosedici GP25, has looked to be unbeatable at times this season, winning all but one Sprint race so far this season, and seven out of the 11 Grands Prix.

The performance of the GP25 has such an advantage that Marquez is reportedly ‘fighting demons’ not to push the bike over its limit during races.

Alex Marquez believes he knows the ‘key’ to beating his older brother, which involves him staying consistent and waiting for a mistake from Marc to open the door for him.

Giacomo Agostini ‘would bet’ on Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha as the ones to beat Marc Marquez in 2027

MotoGP legend Giacomo Agostini has had his say on who he thinks will be the rider/team pairing to dethrone Marquez in 2027, conceding that 2026 ‘is already written for Ducati’.

Speaking with Franco Bobbiese on Paddock TV, the 15-time Grand Prix motorcycle world champion was asked who he would bet on to triumph in 2027 when the new MotoGP regulations come into effect.

Agostini replied: “Quartararo on the Yamaha, who can fight with Marquez.”

Fabio Quartararo has already admitted that he’d struggle against Marquez in the wet even if he were also riding a Ducati. The Frenchman is currently tenth in the standings at the midpoint of the season, 257 points adrift of the six-time MotoGP champion in first.

Yamaha will need to offer the Frenchman a new deal first if Agostini’s words are to come to fruition. Quartararo’s £10m-a-year contract expires after the conclusion of the 2026 season, meaning his services will be up for grabs as MotoGP enters its new era.

Honda needs to put ‘all’ of their energy into 2027 now if they want to have a chance at the MotoGP championship

Agostini was also quizzed on why he opted for a Yamaha bike to topple the Italian manufacturer rather than Honda, to which he replied: “Honda is the biggest manufacturer in the world.

“So with the new rules, unless they say, ‘Well, now we prepare for 2027, let’s forget about now. Let’s put all our energy into 2027.’

“They’re certainly the biggest brand in the world, and they’ll definitely be a tough nut to crack.”

From 2027, smaller engines will be introduced to the MotoGP grid in a bid to make the sport safer and more road-relevant. They will also begin using 100% sustainable fuels, one year later than the implementation of it in Formula 1.

In addition to the engine amendments, the aerodynamics of the bikes will be simplified to encourage closer and more dramatic racing, while ride-height devices will be banned completely. It is yet to be known how the changes will affect the current pecking order.
