MotoGP teams may be about to hand Ducati an unfair advantage for the 2026 season

Aprilia have emerged as a serious threat to Ducati’s MotoGP dominance. But now an important part on their bike could be banned.

Aprilia finished runner-up in the constructors’ standings with a total of seven wins and 20 podiums. Their factory squad placed fifth individually, but this was largely down to the absence of Jorge Martin.

However, according to Mat Oxley and Motor Sport Magazine, Aprilia’s ‘leg wings’ could be banned from 2026. The Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers’ Association, or the MSMA, have collectively called for the rule change.

Who is the biggest threat to Marc Marquez in 2026?

This proposal has been backed by Dorna, race direction and the International Road-Racing Teams’ Association and will be put to a vote this week. Because the change has been proposed in the interests of safety, it doesn’t require a unanimous vote.

Aprilia wing ban would be unfair – and music to Ducati’s ears

Aprilia have partly attributed their progress to improved rear braking performance, aided by the leg wings. Honda have apparently copied the design, which first appeared at the British GP in May.

Some in MotoGP are surprised that it’s taken six months for the ban to be proposed. There is concern around the ‘proximity of the wings to the rider’s legs’, but ‘they are designed to break off’ in the event of an accident.

If the ruling goes against them, Aprilia could certainly question whether the timing and the justification are fair. Their 2026 bike will already be at an advanced stage of development, and this could force a late change to their aerodynamic concept.

While the pressure isn’t coming from Ducati alone, it’s possible that a ban would only entrench their advantage by destabilising Aprilia.

The solution to the Aprilia wing debate is obvious

The new rule could come into force immediately, but it would make more sense to delay it until 2027, when MotoGP aero will be stripped back anyway.

Protecting the riders is, of course, the top priority, and there are neutral parties in favour of the changes. Aprilia can argue, though, that the wings are demonstrably safe.

Carlo Pernat believes that Ducati are worried about Aprilia, although there’s no indication that this has informed their stance. Marco Bezzecchi was the top points scorer in the second half of the season, although he was helped by the absence of Marc Marquez at the final four rounds.
