Marc Marquez has found himself back on the sidelines in 2025 after crashing at the Indonesian GP, but thankfully, it is not as serious as his injury back in 2020.
The Ant of Cervera returned to the dominance he displayed at Honda in the 2010s with Ducati in 2025. Winning 25 races across the season, including Sprints, Marquez wrapped up the title at Motegi, clinching his ninth Grand Prix championship.
At the following round at Mandalika, Marquez crashed with Marco Bezzecchi at turn seven, sending him into the gravel trap. The Spaniard sustained a fractured collarbone and suspected ligament damage.
It was believed that surgery would not be required, but this was U-turned after it was discovered that Marquez had bent a screw in his arm from his crash in 2020. Fortunately, the injury is not as serious as that, and his approach to his recovery has changed from the past.

Marc Marquez’s mother says the family have put 2020 behind them as he is ‘very calm’ during his recovery in 2025
The 32-year-old’s crash at Jerez in 2020 still lives long in the memory of many in MotoGP, after he fractured his humerus in a dramatic highside. Marquez tried to return at the following race, but it was too soon, leading to a lengthy recovery and multiple surgeries.
Arch-rival Valentino Rossi felt Marquez was still the man to beat when he returned from injury. But the Spaniard struggled to perform on his comeback due to his arm injury and Honda’s regression.
Marquez had considered retirement when he made the switch to Gresini, but he has since returned to form with Ducati. Following his injury in 2025, his mother, Roser Alenta, says he is ‘very calm’ during his recovery and has put 2020 firmly behind him.
“He’s very calm. I’m so happy for him, because he knew he was at a low point and he hasn’t stopped pushing himself to improve,” she told AS.
“This alone makes me happy for the rest of my life. He’s overcome so much suffering, and we’ve put his arm behind us now, because neither of us wants to talk about it anymore.
“What happened, happened, but it’s not the end of the world, because just as he suffered through it, he could cause it again someday. But the satisfaction he has with himself is the greatest reward for me.”

How will Marc Marquez perform when he returns from injury in 2026?
Following surgery, the Spaniard has missed the final four races of the 2025 season. Marquez will also miss the Valencia test as he hopes to make his return for pre-season testing at Sepang next year, although he cannot be certain that will be the case.
Naturally, being out for an extended period of time will hamper his preparations with Ducati ahead of the 2026 season. Jorge Lorenzo thinks Marquez will be behind Pedro Acosta and Marco Bezzecchi when he returns, given their improvements with KTM and Aprilia.
But not everyone sees it that way. Marco Melandri thinks Marquez’s injury is actually good for his 2026 chances as he has a ‘forced excuse to rest’ – he no longer wants to rush back as he did in the past.
It could work out either way for the Ducati rider. But what is certain is that the narrative is the same as when he was injured in 2020; Marquez will be the rider to beat when he returns to MotoGP.
