Marc Marquez once shared the ‘big mistake’ he made before his MotoGP comeback in 2021

Marc Marquez doesn’t have the best of luck when it comes to avoiding serious injuries in MotoGP.

The Spaniard has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 season, and it could yet affect him in 2026. Ducati will be hoping that his recovery is speedy, but more importantly, successful. Damage to shoulder ligaments is a delicate thing, and the healing process cannot be rushed.

With regards to this year, Marquez won’t care too much because he had already sealed all titles before being taken out in Indonesia. His MotoGP legacy only strengthened this year, and he has a great chance to consolidate it next year too. He might be the front-runner in the greatest of all time debate, now.

Marquez has become ‘invincible’ due to training with his brother and has evolved over the last few seasons. Doctors discovered a damaged screw in Marquez’s arm during recent surgery, which had to be repaired. It’s another positive step on the road to being 100% fit again.

Marc Marquez once admitted a big ‘mistake’ returning to MotoGP too soon after accident

Luigi Dall’Igna isn’t ready to call Marquez the greatest yet, despite bringing Ducati so much joy in 2025. He wants to see how the rest of his career unfolds and how much more he can achieve.

Valentino Rossi showed how much he respected Marquez after his first comeback in 2020, tipping him to be the one to beat still. A monster crash at the season-opener in Jerez back in 2020 was one of the highlights (albeit negative) of Marquez’s career.

Looking back on the matter, he once revealed how rushing back from the injuries he suffered was his ‘big mistake’, and created an opportunity to improve.

“It’s a nightmare, because it’s coming from a very big crash in Jerez. Then, it’s coming from a big mistake. We come back too early, the doctors, especially in that case, they say to me, ‘That will not be a problem.’ And that was my decision.

“In the end, the one that says the decision is the rider. It was my mistake. It was one of the possibilities to stop my career. I speak a lot with all of my, especially my family and the people close to me. Really close.

“Then I saw there was a solution to improve my personal and professional. Not only personal life, also professional life.”

How did Marc Marquez fare after his MotoGP comeback in 2021?

Andrea Dovizioso taught Marquez an important lesson when the two were vying for the title against each other. A few years later, the Spaniard would need to use those learnings in his own comeback to prove everyone wrong again.

While it did take him five races to find his feet, he did find an appropriate response by winning the 2021 German Grand Prix.

He would win two more before the end of the campaign, but was forced to miss the final two races as a result of a training crash.

It was another setback in his heroic comeback story, but as can be seen by his performances in 2025, he found a way to get where he wanted to in the end.
