Marc Marquez has added a swathe of records to his name following another MotoGP world title in 2025, but Jorge Lorenzo has identified one feat that his former teammate will ‘never surpass’.
Marquez became the oldest MotoGP champion in history after he secured the title at the Japanese Grand Prix earlier in the year.
He overtook his long-time nemesis Valentino Rossi for the feat in the current era of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, but Leslie Graham remains the record holder in the 500cc premier class after his 1949 title win at 37 years of age.
The Spaniard was on course to potentially one-up some of his previous records in the category as well, before his season was cut short for a broken collarbone that was sustained in Indonesia.
Marquez has been ruled out for the rest of the season, with Nicolo Bulega now succeeding Michele Pirro in substituting for the stricken 32-year-old in the final two rounds of the season.

Jorge Lorenzo identifies the one MotoGP record Marc Marquez will ‘never surpass’
In an interview with Diario AS, Marquez’s former MotoGP rival and Honda teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, was asked whether his championship-winning 2025 premier class campaign has proved that he is now the greatest racer on two wheels ever.
The three-time premier class champion replied, “Well, it’s undoubtedly a milestone that will further solidify his position as at least in the top three best riders in history, if not the best.
“There will always be those who say [Giacomo] Agostini has 15 [titles], and he’ll surely never surpass or equal him. But in terms of talent and speed, if we only focus on that – talent and speed – for me, he’s the strongest, fastest rider in history.
“I’ll leave it at that; with this title, he’d be a winner with two manufacturers. But if he were to win with a third, there would be no doubt.
| RANK | RIDER | TOTAL |
| 1 | Giacomo Agostini | 15 |
| 2 | Pablo Nieto | 13 |
| 3= | Carlo Ubbiali | 9 |
| 3= | Mike Hailwood | 9 |
| 3= | Valentino Rossi | 9 |
| 3= | Marc Marquez | 9 |
“Those who doubted whether he’s the best in history wouldn’t have any grounds to argue.”
Having raced against him for the majority of his career in MotoGP, Lorenzo is one of the few riders who have been able to get the better of Marquez over the course of a whole season.
The Spaniard holds the feat in high regard, with Lorenzo previously highlighting the fact that he is the only rider to beat every member of the ‘Fantastic Five’ at some point during his career.

Marc Marquez can equal Giacomo Agostini’s premier class titles record next season
With his most recent feat in 2025, Marquez matched his fierce rival Rossi in championship counts.
Both riders have identical accolades, with the duo boasting nine Grand Prix world titles apiece, seven of which have come in the premier class.
Despite the rift between the two greats, Marquez called his equalling of Rossi’s title tally an ‘honour’.
The respect that the Spaniard has for his arch-nemesis doesn’t seem to be reciprocated, and Rossi’s distaste for Marquez may become even more apparent if he manages to surpass his achievements with an eighth MotoGP title in 2026.
The 32-year-old will be heading into the new campaign as the clear favourite after such a dominant showing during his debut year with the factory Ducati outfit, and Rossi will be wary of what Davide Tardozzi told Marquez during the celebrations after his title feat.
If Marquez does prove to be successful again in 2026, he will equal Agostini’s record of eight titles in the premier class of Grand Prix motorcycle racing.
