Which teams do well at the Grand Prix of Malaysia with Ducati dominating Sepang

The Grand Prix of Malaysia is celebrating its 25th running in 2025 after joining the calendar in 1991, with Ducati leading the way for the most successful team.

The race was originally held at the Shah Alam Circuit for the first seven years. It was then moved for one race at the Johor Circuit due to the 1997 Asian financial crisis, which saw the local government unable to host the race at the original track.

By 1999, the construction of the Sepang International Circuit had finished, and with a more modern track that was closer to the Kuala Lumpur airport, the race was moved to the track. The circuit has been a staple on the calendar since, only missing 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ducati are the most dominant MotoGP team at the Grand Prix of Malaysia, and will be hoping to win again after an impressive 2025 season. The Italian squad have claimed the “Triple Crown” this season, with victories in the riders’, constructors’ and teams’ championships.

The team will be hoping that Francesco Bagnaia can claim back-to-back wins at the track, following on from his success in 2024. Ducati’s other rider Marc Marquez rivals his teammate in the most successful current rider at the Sepang International Circuit, although the Spaniard will not be competing for the remainder of the season after his crash in Indonesia.

Ducati are the most successful MotoGP team at the Grand Prix of Malaysia

Ducati has seen the most successes at the Grand Prix of Malaysia in the modern era with eight wins at the Sepang International Circuit.

Their first victory came in 2005 when Loris Capirossi dominated the grand prix weekend, starting from pole position and taking the chequered flag in first place.

The victory around Sepang was the Italian’s second win, taking a back-to-back victory following the previous race in Japan.

Ducati have taken wins at the Grand Prix of Malaysia for the last three consecutive years, with Bagnaia taking the victory in 2024.

Bagnaia took pole position for the race, and although he faced a tough battle with championship rival Jorge Martin in the early stages, he was able to score his 10th win of the year.

Honda are the most successful team across all classes at Sepang

Honda has the most success at the Sepang International Circuit, with 33 wins across all classes, including the previous cc categories. The Japanese team have 13 premier class wins at the Grand Prix of Malaysia, including six in the MotoGP era.

Despite the team being the most successful manufacturer of all time in Malaysia, they haven’t seen a race victory since Marc Marquez claimed victory in 2018.

The Spaniard had taken pole for the grand prix, but was handed a grid penalty for impeding Andrea Iannone, so started from seventh place.

Marquez was second after five laps, taking the fight to the race leader, Valentino Rossi, in the final stages. With four laps remaining, Rossi was pushing too hard to stay ahead, sliding off the track and handing Marquez his 70th grand prix victory.
