Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati struggles are at an all-time high and the Italian rider must be looking forward to the end of the 2025 MotoGP campaign.

Although he won a race just a few weeks ago, the variety of emotions knows no bounds at Ducati this season. Within seven days, they went from utter elation following Marc Marquez’s seventh title and Bagnaia’s win in Japan, to rock bottom in Indonesia.

MotoGP has been a bit strange recently, and it’s now difficult to say with certainty whether Ducati have the fastest bike. Aprilia have been mighty, and Marco Bezzecchi has just moved into the top three of the standings. There’s an argument to suggest that they now have the fastest machine.

Valentino Rossi is convinced Bagnaia will return to the front, and he has already proven that he can produce such a turnaround. Now he needs more consistency and to avoid trundling around in last place. Bagnaia wouldn’t even talk about a Ducati issue at Phillip Island, and it was a rare move by his standards.

Behind closed doors, Gresini’s Fermin Aldeguer agrees with Bagnaia about the problems that their bikes face in dirty air or when following other riders.

At the last race in Australia, the two-time champion admitted that he preferred to crash rather than finish in last place, which is a damning assessment of his situation.

Bagnaia has been told to leave Ducati and chase a fresh start with a new team, in a bid to get his confidence back and leave some of the negative energy surrounding him behind.

There are already suggestions that Ducati are lining up Bagnaia’s replacement, but you would be hard-pressed to find a manufacturer that isn’t interested in someone with the talent of Pedro Acosta right now.

In recent weeks, there has been a bit of a change in Ducati’s ‘Inside’ videos, which show behind-the-scenes action at each race weekend. Throughout the season, they haven’t been shy when it comes to showing secret meetings and other discreet conversations.

However, since winning the title in Japan, there has been a noticeable difference in the videos released from Indonesia and Australia.

With Bagnaia being in last place at some point in both weekends, it appears that editorially, or from a PR standpoint, they have decided to include a lot less behind-the-scenes footage. Instead, there has been a lot more footage of interviews in public surroundings.

With the recent news that Marquez has now been ruled out for the rest of the season, Bagnaia now has an excellent opportunity to get back on track without any pressure. Even if he can muster a podium at the upcoming round in Malaysia, it could do his confidence a world of good.

Bagnaia’s 2026 contract means that his spot with Ducati is safe heading into the new season, but that doesn’t mean he’s not under pressure.

With the majority of the grid set to become free agents at the end of next year, Bagnaia has to prove himself worthy of a top ride.

Bagnaia’s troubles run deeper than his bike, according to KTM’s Pol Espargaro, and whatever else he is battling needs to be solved if he wants to convince Ducati to offer him an extension.

After finishing 19th in the Phillip Island sprint race, Mat Oxley expected ‘tough’ Bagnaia talks, but it’s hard to see what else can be done to fix his predicament in 2025. Surely, both sides have tried everything by now.
