MotoGP Sprint Race results as Marco Bezzecchi wins in Australia and Francesco Bagnaia struggles

Aprilia star Marco Bezzecchi won the 2025 MotoGP Australian Grand Prix Sprint Race ahead of Trackhouse Aprilia’s Raul Fernandez by 3.149s at Phillip Island on Saturday.

Saturday started well for Yamaha as Fabio Quartararo got pole position for the Australian GP by only 0.031 seconds over Aprilia pilot Marco Bezzecchi. Home hero Jack Miller also put his Pramac Yamaha M1 on the front row of the Australian GP grid in P3, with a deficit of 0.243s.

No Yamaha rider would lead the Sprint at Phillip Island at the end of the first lap, though, as Trackhouse Aprilia ace Raul Fernandez moved into the lead in front of Bezzecchi. Quartararo tried to hang on around the outside at Turn 1, but the Frenchman fell down into fifth place.

Fernandez also remained in a largely comfortable lead ahead of Bezzecchi through to Lap 10 of 13, when the factory Aprilia rider finally positioned himself to try a move. Bezzecchi took a wider line than Fernandez out of Turn 1 to carry speed into T2 and claimed the inside line.

Gresini rider Alex Marquez also enjoyed a strong start to the Phillip Island Sprint, as the 29-year-old rose from P6 on the grid into P3. But the Spaniard did not have an answer for the early pace that Fernandez and Bezzecchi found aboard the Aprilia RSGP25 out in the lead.

Marquez’s continued lack of pace also gave Miller a chance to steal P3 in the Phillip Island Sprint on Lap 5 of 13 with a lunge under braking at Turn 10. But the power advantage from his Ducati GP24 saw Marquez fly straight back past Miller aboard the Yamaha M1 at Turn 1.

Miller also found himself a sitting duck to KTM rider Pedro Acosta on Lap 7, as the Spaniard used a double slipstream from the Australian and Marquez to take P3 at Turn 1. Miller used the slipstream he got from Marquez to effectively remain in P4, as the Gresini star fell to P5.

KTM rider Brad Binder saw an early end to his Phillip Island Sprint, as the South African had a crash at Turn 2 on Lap 2/13. The 30-year-old had only qualified P13 after failing to get out of Q1. Binder has a three-place grid penalty for the Australian GP for blocking Johann Zarco.

The Phillip Island Sprint was another sorry Saturday in the 2025 MotoGP season for factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia. The two-time champion offered nothing as he crawled to a bleak P19 finish, on a weekend when teammate Marc Marquez is sidelined through injury.

No Ducati riders finished on the podium for the first time ever in a MotoGP Sprint Race this Saturday, with VR46’s Fabio Di Giannantonio the highest finisher on a Desmosedici. Bagnaia did not even profit from Ai Ogura’s eight-second penalty for a tyre pressure infringement.
