Ducati will run Michele Pirro as a replacement rider in the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, with Marc Marquez not racing at Phillip Island after his surgery for a collarbone injury.

The Bologna Bullets have confirmed that Marquez will miss the next two rounds in Australia and Malaysia as a result of the injury he sustained last time out in Indonesia. Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi crashed into Marquez at Mandalika after he misjudged their speed on the first lap.

Marquez initially hoped to avoid any surgery for the injury, but he ultimately had to undergo an operation. His coracoid fracture did not show enough progress in his recovery, so surgery was needed to surgically stabilise and repair the acromioclavicular ligaments in his shoulder.

Bezzecchi must serve a double long lap penalty in the Australian Grand Prix for the collision with Marquez in Indonesia on the grounds of irresponsible riding. The penalty could disrupt Bezzecchi’s hopes for the Australian GP, as the Aprilia rider was likely to contend for the win.

Alex Marquez feels Marc Marquez is in a ‘positive and calm’ mood after his surgery

Ducati now face an anxious wait to learn when Marquez will return from his injury, with the 32-year-old’s collarbone surgery threatening his presence at each of the final four rounds of the 2025 MotoGP season. But Alex Marquez says his brother, Marc, is in a “positive” mood.

Alex also believes Marc Marquez winning the 2025 MotoGP title in Japan with five rounds to spare has helped his elder sibling find peace after his injury. The Spaniard has dominated for Ducati, with Marc leading Alex atop the 2025 standings by 183 points with four events to go.

Alex Marquez told AS about Marc: “He’s fine. He’s positive. In the end, it happened at a time when he wasn’t in any rush. He’s got everything done, so he’s positive and very calm, which is the most important thing during an injury.”

Marc Marquez returning from surgery for the Valencia test is almost impossible

The potential timeline that Marc Marquez now faces to return from his surgery may put the peace that Alex Marquez believes his brother has found since his injury to the test. It is said that Marc Marquez aims to return from his injury in Valencia to ride in the post-season test.

Marquez wants to sample Ducati’s bike for the 2026 MotoGP season in the end-of-2025 test on November 17 after the Valencia Grand Prix. But MOW now reports that it will be ‘almost impossible’ for Marquez to ride in the Valencia test having undergone surgery for his injury.

Ducati have only ruled Marquez out of the Australian GP at Phillip Island this week and next week’s Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. Yet MotoGP’s chief medical officer, Dr Angel Charte, expects Ducati will also rule Marquez out of at least the Portuguese Grand Prix at Portimao.

“Australia, Malaysia and a return to Portugal, I think, are quite complicated, because it’s an injury that, if not treated calmly, can have consequences,” Charte said, via Motorsport.com.
