MotoGP expert gives five word answer when asked if Marc Marquez’s latest injury could end his career

Marc Marquez has just completed another surgery and will now begin the recovery process in a bid to return to MotoGP before the end of 2025.

The seven-time MotoGP champion crashed out of the Indonesian Grand Prix after being tagged from behind by Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi. It was a disastrous day for the factory Ducati team, who wound up walking away from the Grand Prix with no points to show for their efforts.

Originally, Marquez feared ligament damage and was sent straight back to Barcelona to be assessed further by doctors. He was ruled out of the upcoming races in Australia and Malaysia almost immediately, and it’s not yet known whether he’ll be out for even longer.

Ligament damage worries Marquez’s camp as they can see what it has done to other riders in the past. Valentino Rossi once had shoulder problems in 2010 and struggled for a while. Marquez has done the ‘impossible’ this year, but now it’s time for him to get some proper rest.

Mat Oxley has ‘doubt’ over whether Marc Marquez’s latest injury is career-ending

Michele Pirro is Marquez’s replacement in Australia, but nothing beyond that has been confirmed for the following round in Malaysia. It may depend on performance and whether the team wants to call up a World Superbike rider, following the conclusion of their campaign.

Nicolo Bulega didn’t want to replace Marquez because he didn’t think that a one-off opportunity would benefit him. With four races to go this season, Ducati will be relieved that they have wrapped up their titles well in advance of the last race.

But will Marquez be back for that last event? Perhaps there’s a chance that the injury keeps him out for longer than planned, or even worse, keeps him out for good. Journalist and ex-motorcycle rider Mat Oxley has revealed whether he thinks the shoulder issues could be career-ending.

“I very much doubt it,” he said on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The ‘truth’ about Marquez’s injury was that the gravel might have played a role in how severe his pain ended up being. Only the Spaniard knows how quickly he might be able to return to action now, but rushing back as he did once before will do him no favours.

When is the last time Marc Marquez missed a MotoGP race due to a crash?

Marquez has been able to keep his nose fairly clean in recent years, suffering only a few falls since moving from Honda to Ducati.

The last time he officially missed a race was during his final season with the Japanese manufacturer in 2023.

He was unable to compete at the Dutch TT after a nightmare weekend in Germany one week prior, but did return to claim one last podium for his team in Japan before the end of the year.

The most useful session now left is the post-season test in Valencia, as teams prepare for the 2026 season. Competitive action should no longer be Marquez’s priority, but getting himself in the best possible shape for the future instead.
