Francesco Bagnaia won his first Sprint race of the season at the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of Ducati teammate and championship leader, Marc Marquez.

The Italian rider didn’t put a foot wrong at the Motegi circuit as he held on to the lead from pole position to take the chequered flag ahead of Marquez by just under two seconds.

Bagnaia and Marquez were joined by Pedro Acosta on the podium in Japan, with the Aprilia duo of Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin crashing out at turn one of the first lap due to an error from the latter, which saw him misjudge his braking point and career into the side of his teammate.

The win marks a change in fortune for Bagnaia, who has had a torrid season atop the factory Ducati GP25 against his Spanish counterpart, who has been truly dominant during the current campaign on the same bike.

MotoGP fans unite in their happiness for Francesco Bagnaia after his win in the Motegi Sprint race

Following Bagnaia’s taking of the chequered flag for the Japanese Grand Prix Sprint race, MotoGP fans quickly took to social media to express their delight for the Italian rider, whose struggles have been at the forefront of attention during the 2025 season.

“The release of emotion must be incredible for him. Nice to see him and Marc after passing the finish line,” one fan wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) in reference to the hardships that Bagnaia has faced.

Many fans welcomed the two-time world champion back to form, with one user commenting, “Welcome back, Pecco. Good to see him winning again,” whilst another fan posted, “Love to see that! Welcome back, Pecco.”

One user welcomed the win on Saturday after seeing their favourite rider, Bezzecchi, crash out on the opening lap, congratulating Bagnaia with, “Thanks Pecco, you made my day after Bez’s crash. Welcome back, congrats.”

Another MotoGP fan is hopeful of it being the start of a return to form for the 28-year-old after his impressive times in qualifying and practice, commenting, “Having a 10/10 weekend, so it was about time. Hopefully it continues like this for the rest of the season.”

Finally, one user pointed out the 2022 and 2023 premier class titles that Bagnaia already has under his belt, posting, “World champion for a reason.”

Francesco Bagnaia has benefited from the help of MotoGP legend Casey Stoner

Bagnaia was joined in the Ducati garage by Casey Stoner at the previous round of racing at Misano. The former MotoGP rider sought to help the factory Ducati man following a 2025 campaign that has seen him fail to emulate the results of his teammate.

The advice failed to make an instant impact on the Italian rider as he crashed out of the San Marino Grand Prix in an unforced error.

Despite the DNF classification, Ducati weren’t unhappy with Bagnaia’s crash due to the fact that it showed he was still pushing to figure out his issues.

However, Bagnaia spent more time with Stoner at the iconic ranch of Valentino Rossi between race weekends. He was able to further pick the brain of the two-time title winner in hopes of turning his season around.

The 28-year-old will take a lot of positives and confidence from his victory on Saturday afternoon, and can look towards replicating his feat in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
